I just installed in my ubuntu laptop. Not seem to be too heavy to port to NIT. But I don't know.

Kate Alhola ported Google Gadgets to Maemo. Currently the port is in alpha stage though.

Why is the required space for installation so large?

Well, its quite a big package because it also contains a lot of software. Also, it depends on Python, Qt, WebKit, and a lot more.

for a long time my n800 has only 20M free memory. i had to remove gnumerics and a couple of applications to install the latest OS upgrade. This application is out of reach for me. I am desesperated looking for the n900... or any other device with more memory and processing power....

Usually boot from SD is faster if you use the faster kernel.
