770 vs Fujitsu LT 500

I am looking for a touch screen / internet tablet. I've never used anything like this before. I'm not exactly sure what I'll end up doing with it, but for now it will be internet surfing, IM-ing from bed and eventually some home control. I have 3 original xbox's with XBMC on them and just found out they have the web control. So that will be a good use for it, but then I'd like to get more home control out of it. I really don't plan on taking it with me everywhere so that is why I'm considering the LT 500 b/c of it's 8" screen. Does anyone have good experience with these 2 and could give me the pros and cons. I'm also looking at the N800, but I can get the LT 500 for $140 and it's got such a bigger screen. Opinions please.

Thanks,

J

Keep in mind that the Fujitsu does not have wireless built in. You have to add a PCMCIA wireless card. Not a big deal, but that will add to the cost.

Also, the Fujitsu is running windows so even with the faster processor, it might not feel any faster. Of course you might be able to dump windows and load Linux on it. I've never used the Fujitsu before however.

I'd go with the Nokia Internet Tablets. With Windows 98/2000 you wont exactly have all the latest software. Web browsing wouldn't be that great - I don't even know if you'd be able to run the latest flash and stuff :( Unless of course you could put linux on it, like Sic said.

I have both, the 770 is faster on the web and video content if you can believe that. :) The 500 is about 4 times the size and the screen isn't as nice in full light/sun light to work on. Underscore is right, your going to be running an old OS that just isn't optimized for a tablet of any kind where the 770 is.

sic0048-I knew it didn't have wireless built in. Most of the ebay ones come with the PCMCIA card for wireless so that is already figured in the cost.

Freakair-Full light/sun light is not a concern. This will be indoors, but your are the type of person I'm looking for.... someone that has had both. Did you own them at the same time? I really like the bigger screen... have you ever heard of anyone that has put linux on the LT500? Anything else that you can expand on would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the responses so far, keep em coming!

For linux on these devices, try http://www.neurath.org/stylistic_lt_c500/ and http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=401340. it may be difficult to get it all set up though. I havent read these, just pulled em up from a quick google search. (on my tablet, btw) If you could get that working on that device, i'd be jealous!

As someone who owns 2 LT C500 units (win 2k), and a N800, I would have to say the N800 is much more handier. Before I purchased the N800, I used the tablets for gps navigation, portable computing, pretty much everything I use the N800 for. Obviously, the N800 will have longer battery life.

I have since installed larger harddrives in the C500s, and use them exclusively for capturing DV from my video cameras (I do some videography on the side).

That Fujitsu is interesting. If you could get the 256mb ram version, you might be able to install a lightweight Linux distro like Xubuntu and have access to a lot more software than what you can get on the 770. It looks like a pain to set up though.

I recently upgraded from a 770 to the N800 running OS2008, and if you want my advice, it's worth the extra money. The N800 is a much better browsing experience. The 770 has trouble on a lot of websites.

That Fujitsu is definitely interesting though. Good luck.

Thanks for all the responses! Unfortunately / fortunately I bought a N800 just a couple minutes ago off ebay so I have that on it's way. I will keep the LT500 in mind for a more "mount on the wall" type application if I get my automated home control running the way I want. Thanks again for the advice and help.

jjchambers - what home automation system are you using? I run CQC (Charmed Quark Controller) and actually use the N800 (and N770) as a remote device to control my system. Nice to see some fellow automation buffs on line here.

PS - you will love the N800.
