[Palm OS] Does Phone Link work?
 

I just encountered reference to a Palm app called phone link (details here).

Among other things, this app allows you to:

• Send and receive SMS (text) messages
• Dial phone numbers in Contacts

On a Palm OS device with bluetooth that is paired to a GSM bluetooth phone.

Does this app work on the n810?

Don't know, but there is a Phonelink app that does similar stuff. A bit more (than you list) actually.

Does it? From what I've heard it only allows you to dial and to send sms. I'd vastly rather have an app that allows you to both send sms on the n810 keyboard, receive sms on the n810 screen and leave my phone in my pocket. Does phonelink do this?

Does anyone know if there is something similar to PhoneLink that works with other phones (It's only for Nokia + Symbian devices, right?)? I have a Samsung Blackjack and would love to be able to have the n810 act as my phone while I'm in the car.

I'm surprised there aren't more generic Bluetooth profiles to provide this kind of capability (ok, I also wouldn't be surprised if I just didn't know about it). I might get an Android phone or some other Linux phone later but would really like to be able to offload as much of the work on to my n810 as possible while I'm in the car (Net access, phone calls, and other stuff like SMS elsewhere).

Phonelink uses libGnokii, which was originally developed to access (now-old) phones running a proprietary Nokia OS; but it has had some Symbian capability (though not all variants) and AT (most other phones) capability added, so it (and thus phonelink) works with many phones. Dunno about the Blackjack in particular.

IIRC, it does (when told to) wait for SMSes and receive the text; it also waits for incoming calls and sends a dbus notification, so you can set up a task to alert you when your phone rings...

I have it running on my N800 paired to the first gen Razr phone. I can send text from the N800 and any SMS sent to my phone gets forwarded to my tablet. All received sms' get logged in the phone, but any sent ones do not get copied in the phone's history. If I type in a number the tablet will send it to my phone to dial, but at least with my razer, I still have to use that to converse - the phone call can not be handled by the tablet as if it were skype or something, it just saves you the 'trouble' of using the phone to dial the number.

I'm using the AT driver and it took a bit to get the program to work. The download link at Maemo when browsing on the tablet kept getting "Operation Failed" so I blanked out all my repos and added them from a master link I found on this site and installed phonelink using the app browser instead.

Thanks to the lack of the appropriate BT profiles, you can't use the n810 as a "speakerphone." That would be the ultimate for my daily use since my building has a tendency to block cell phones and I have to leave it propped in the window to get a signal. Nothing like receiving a call and trying to talk with your head pressed into the glass... :D

Is there any list of phones that are likely to work? Does anyone know if the newer Sony Ericsson phones work with this app?

Also, has anyone tried the Palm OS phone link app on an NIT?

haha yeah, I was tempted to look in to bluez development because I'd like to see:
- FTP support (which apparently relies heavily on OBEX anyway)
- Speakerphone/dialing(keyboard?)/other phone stuff

But I can already think of about a million projects for the n810 that I'll never start (or can't handle) so I don't think I'll ever get anywhere with this.
