Is possible?

Hi to all! Im about to receive my first tablet the N810, this is a new area for me because like I said this one is my first one, I had only S60 devices (by the way if someone wants to know something related to S60 ask me) Anyway I found this amazing ''Internet Tablet'' community.

I was wondering if I can connect a CD drive and/or a Hard Drive to my N810, like connecting a USB keyboard (with USB manager and the female adapter)
That would be really useful, has anybody tried to do this?

And a Noob question, can I install other OS in my new tablet? I saw that I can install Android but that is weird because is not available, right? What about XP?

Thanks!!

You can connect a hard drive yes. A CD drive would be a little harder, but I believe I saw kernel modules for it floating around this site a while ago.

Both of these would require a USB hub with an AC power input since the tablet can't supply enough power to run a CD or Hard Drive.

And yes you can install several other OSes on your tablet. There's easy installs for Debian arm and Android. (Debian is another Linux distribution) And the version of Android we have is an "M3" release which means that it's a Pre-Alpha. In other words it's a development version :)

And there's no way our tablets are going to be able to run Windows XP, but some people got Windows 95 running in dosbox. Earlier version of windows also work in Dosbox to some degree. There's also emulators that allow you to run Mac OS 8 and lower :)

Hope this helps :)

Thnks for such a complete answer!, Only one doubt, which is your prefered OS? Which one is more useful and complete?

And for example if I run Mac OS 8 i will be able to run all apps normally? I mean will I have full Mac OS 8 in my tablet?

Thanks!

Re: Is possible?

Strangely enough, my preferred OS is the stock one that comes on the tablet. It's not perfect by any means, it's got a lot of flaws and so forth, but it works well enough that while I install and use other operating systems and window managers for most of my time using the tablet I just use Maemo (the normal OS)

However, it's really nice to have the option of running other operating systems on the tablet :)

And yes, you should be able to run a full Mac os 8 on your tablet. The speed might not always be so great but it should run almost all apps written for MacOS8 :)

You might try contacting the developer who ported Basilisk II (the macintosh emulator) to check if there's ones that don't work. :)

lets not forget KDE as a replacement OS !!!
PB had done a great job in porting it and the last version (ZELDA--search for it on this forum) is pretty good

Very true, I love KDE on my N810, although I didn't list it here because it's not actually a different OS. The correct nomenclature for it is an "Alternate Window Manager" :)

But yes, KDE is a great "Alternative Environment"
