[Android] Android SDK Petition - Please Sign (and digg)

As you guys may be aware of, it's been quite a while since the latest Android SDK was released by Google. Not only that, but info seems to be quite tight these days in regards to the future of the platform.

A petition has been made to raise awareness and hopefully show Google how many people this affects and want updates.

If you have used the Android SDK and want Google to step up their game, please sign the petition: http://www.anddev.org/petition/

I also submitted it to Digg: http://digg.com/programming/Android_...e_Want_Updates

The Petition:
Quote:

Hello everyone,

I'm starting this petition, to express my personal frustration about the release cycles and the information policy of the Android SDK. Before m5 we were waiting about 2 months, now we are waiting almost 4 months! Partially the SDK is buggy (i.e.: the MediaPlayer) and features like built-in Geocoding are not working.

In order not to lose many highly encouraged developers, I think its time to release some news about the development process of the SDK. Maybe let us know why we have to live with these long release-cycles.

As you maybe know, I am one of the biggest fans of Android, putting a lot of work into the community through my forum. But unfortunately disappointment is being born in the last weeks :(
(Especially thinking of recently existing OpenMoko-Phones and the new iPhone SDK).

In my personal opinion it is not the right choice to keep developers in the dark. We, the developers, are the absolute base of success to the whole Android platform. The presentation with GoogleIO was a good first step but for me it was not enough.

Therefore I am 'signing' this 'petition', hoping to receive information/update on the development process of the Android SDK.

Regards, plusminus

PS: I didn't want to depreciate the awesome work of the Android Dev Team or anyone else!!!

note: the petition is not started by me, I'm just publicizing it. Plusminus from AndDev is the originator of the Petition.

Even more interesting is that some of the developers for applications have the latest SDK (silenced by an NDA). So Google is playing favorites.

Yeah, it's a bit annoying. I can understand Google showing a bit of extra love to the top 50 Devs, but at least share some of that love with the rest of the developers!

You want to give the top 50 devs the latest and greatest? Fine. But at least give us something instead of leaving us in the dust for 4, 5 months with no word or anything....

I spoke with the petitioner Nicolas (plusminus) and we both feel Google will do the right thing and Google provide the new SDK publicly in August and seems recent statements from Google backs this up - http://www.googeandblog.com/

Yeah, I figured that Google would probably ignore the whole petition thing and go straight ahead with their plan (a bit stubborn imo, but whatever). I understand the reasons that Google hasn't given us anything completed (ie, for the greater good. finished product that is "perfect"), but I was hoping that Google would at least keep us informed ("August 23rd we will be releasing X" or even incremental SDK updates would be nice).

Well, I guess we wait. By the way, you're missing an 'l' in your link.

i did a bit of digging a while back, and the boss of the android project (android was something google bought btw, he was the one that started it after getting tired of having his decisions overruled in his other startup, danger, of hiptop/sidekick fame) is old hat apple.

had i know that at the time, i had cried wolf...

after finding it out, i view android as basically dead. openmoko is the best option for the foreseeable future, with symbian being the joker in the sleeve...

Interesting.... Would you mind providing some links to back you up?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Android#History
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Rubin

seems to cover the bases.

note however, that i was not aware of this history section until later.
instead i dug it out of news articles.

hell, now that im looking at it, the android development environment looks very similar to this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danger_...for_the_Hiptop

java with a special API, only software via the danger catalog (given the timeframe this seems to be a forerunner to the apple appstore). sounds strangely familiar.
