Instructions for installing MPlayer rc2
 

I recently installed Bundyo's build of MPlayer RC2. Being able to resume flv files is sweet, and I the flv performance is improved somewhat as well. Thanks Bundyo! Anyway, the process that it took to install it from my Ubuntu machine was a little more complex than I had expected, so I have decided to document my steps in order to make things a little easier for others that watch a lot of flv files. If I've made any mistakes here, let me know and I'll update the post.

* Install the regular version of mplayer from:
http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2008/mplayer/
* Also need 'libungif4g' package installed (mplayer gives a missing library error without it). Only found in "Maemo Chinook" repository. Search for "libungif" at http://www.gronmayer.com/it and install the "Maemo Chinook" repo. Once the repo is installed, run "sudo gainroot" and "apt-get install libungif4g". If it gives you an error about missing some dependencies, one of which is "flash-and-reboot", then you simply have to run "apt-get -f install" and then try again. After the package is installed, you can disable that repo.
* Download the file mplayer_1.0rc2-3_svn20080321.tar.gz onto your Ubuntu laptop
* Extract it
* Get code from this page and put into a file called menu.conf:

* Put the 'menu.conf' file into the extracted directory
* Delete the 'mencoder' file in the extracted directory
* Plug the n810 into your laptop with the USB cable
* Copy the extracted directory to the "2.1 GB Media" that appears on your desktop
* Log on to your tablet as root, either by ssh or with "sudo gainroot" (I won't describe the exact steps to get root access here)
* Use these commands to take a backup of the three files that you're about to overwrite (if they exist):
cp /home/user/.mplayer/config /home/user/.mplayer/config.old
cp /usr/bin/mplayer /usr/bin/mplayer.old
cp /etc/mplayer/menu.conf /etc/mplayer/menu.conf.old
* Use these commands to copy the three files to the required destinations:
cp /media/mmc2/mplayer_1.0rc2-3_svn20080321/mplayer /usr/bin/mplayer
cp /media/mmc2/mplayer_1.0rc2-3_svn20080321/config /home/user/.mplayer/config
cp /media/mmc2/mplayer_1.0rc2-3_svn20080321/menu.conf /etc/mplayer/menu.conf
* That should be it! Open mplayer from the menu and give it a try
