battery started getting flat fast
Hi,
Its been around 3 weeks that I've bought IT. First the battery was alright but now it started running out very fast. Though in the battery info it says idle time is 4 days but when I leave it at night and check in the morning the power is off and have to recharge it. During this 3 weeks time, I have also updated my IT by installing new applications like homememfree, omweather, load-applet, openssh etc etc.. So, I'm wondering if they are the cause for it. But when not used does these things matter. Also I've noticed sometimes its very slow to response and even freezes. So, is there any tools or remedy for this? Thanks. |
Re: battery started getting flat fast
Are you leaving it on the desktop? If so applets like homememfree tend to use more memory and CPU compared to when they're in the background (another window). So you could try ticking those off.

I had a similar problem when I first got my 770, it would die within the day. It turns out that, for some reason, it was not properly going into sleep mode. This was fixed by reinstalling the OS. Not sure if this will help, but it probably can't hurt.
Good Luck. |
Re: battery started getting flat fast
what is the etc, etc..?
I've just had my battery drain quickly on my n800 and I worked out it was sliderotate 'play sound' setting, turned sound off and battery is back to normal. |
Re: battery started getting flat fast
i took om weather off my n810 because it was eating a lot of battery- ymmv

Re: battery started getting flat fast
Ok, thanks for the replies guys. First I'll have to take simplest step. So, I've ticked the homememfree off the desktop. How about omweather? I've load-applet icon is in the status bar. 'etc etc' are other applications as I didn't want to make huge list of all the applications. Also I've installed statusbarclock and its in the status bar. There really should be paging system like in symbian OS so when not in use battery doesn't get consumed much at all.

Re: battery started getting flat fast
The problem with many home screen and statusbar applets is that they gradually consume more and more memory over time. Since they run all the time, this leads to slow application response times and eventually to a tablet reboot.
If they don't stay idle when the tablet is unused, battery also gets drained very quickly because power management cannot come into action. If you're having memory or battery issues when running applets it's a good idea to reboot the tablet from time to time until the issues are fixed in the particular programs. :( |
Re: battery started getting flat fast
I doubt it's OMWeather or the connection setting (unless you're out of range of wifi and it's searching for a connection). I have OMWeather running and updating every hour. I leave my N800 connected to wifi 24 hours a day. The battery lasts for several days in sleep mode with OMWeather still updating. I don't know how many days because I use it a lot and usually charge it every night, but I've gone 4 days without a charge.
I had a similar battery drain problem, only I was dual booting to a cloned OS on the internal SD card. It worked fine for a few weeks and suddenly started using all the battery in a few hours. I had made some changes and installed a few new programs, but even undoing all that wouldn't fix it. I reflashed the OS several times and restored from an old backup, but the battery still drained. I finally reflashed and didn't restore from a backup and the problem is gone. |
Re: battery started getting flat fast
I don't think anyone's had any problem with Khertan's home* applets (homememfree, etc.), as they stop updating when the screen is off, or when the home screen's not displayed. Some other applets are not so good, and memory leaks have been suspected at various times in various versions of various applets. The best way to tell is to disable them until things go back to normal, and then restore any that didn't make much difference. Applets (whether home or statusbar) are definitely the most likely culprit, though; it's just finding which applet.
