The Terminal e.g. "cd /usr/share/" or a more graceful approach, a program like Emelfm2.

isn't there a way to get the file browser to show all files? I could have sworn I saw an option in gconfig a long time ago that was like "show filesystem", but now I can't find it... Maybe it was just a preference in a program that had a file browser.

?? - Which File browser? .document is shown by default in the file manager app

Emelfm2 can show hidden files as well, its /home/user/.documents/ etc... emelfm2 is very easy to use, but to get the most out of it, you need to run it as root... Has built in text edit and cool things like that

Re: locate/open hidden files

for the sake of complete disclosure:

the -a option in the ls (directory listing) utility in linux/unix lists all files (including hidden).

so, the command to show hidden files/directories would be: ls -a (or ls -la for the long directory listing, including hidden files)

Re: locate/open hidden files

To view the entire filesystem with Nokia's default file manager, I imagine creating a symlink to the root "/" from /home/user/MyDocs/ would do the trick. But you still wouldn't be able to view dot "." files (what's the proper name for those?). And also, I don't think that would "play nice" with the Backup app...

Not only with Backup but also for some daemons they try to walk down the file tree and go recursively back to /. Then CPU goes up to the roof!

Very true! I never thought of that.
