Booting from Internal Memory Card

I am running out of storage space on my Device memory. I have read a number of threads and went on to Maemo.org for instructions on increasing the device memory. Some of the threads seem rather old and mention instructions for N770.

I want to make sure I am doing it correctly, are there any new threads or can someone point me to some simple, solid instructions for a newbie.

I have a N800, running OS2008. I plan to put a 32GB on the Internal Memory. What's a good partition?

Also, I tend to remove my Internal Mem card a lot, to quicky sync data with my PC, should I leave it intact once I do the partition and booting? How stable are apps that run on the Internal Card?

Or should I leave things intact, as I am pretty content with all the apps I need, but I only have 37MB left on the device memory, and virtual enabled at 128MB. My concern is the 37MB is not enough space for apps and other things to function optimally?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Would it be easier to get the card in and out by using the external memory slot?

Go to file manager and clean up everything you do not want, video clips, Documentations (manuals) Images, Audio clips, yo would have another 78 Mb gained.

only 32G ? :D

I'd have at least 2 partitions for linux and 1 for vfat:

- 1st partition: vfat 29G (for movies, cds,....)
- 2nd: ext2 or ext3 1G (for plain OS2008 and apps)
- 3rd: ext2 or ext3 2G (for KDE or Debian,...)

* Use "sfdisk -uM /dev/...." to partiiton
* Change bootmenu.conf to be able to select the 2nd or 3rd partitions as cacdidates for booting.

If you want you can create more ext2 (or ext3) as backup partitions!

Good luck!

Re: Booting from Internal Memory Card

Another virtue of booting from memory card is that it provides great backup capabilities. After cloning OS to card, I started using acronis true image (purchased and delievered over the internets) to backup the card's entire image to my windows box. After I install a new program, or update my personal menu just as I like it, I copy the new image. That way if anything goes wrong, I have various versions of my tablet in the wings. Flashing a backedup image from my computer to a new card is also very easy with acronis.

Somewhere fanoush gave some instructions on how you can backup your n800's flash without a thirdparty app that costs $. But for the ease and simplicity, the $30 I paid for acronis was well worth it (to me).
