How do you change device/computer name?

hello,
When my N810 is connected to a network/router, it shows the name "Nokia N810" and some numbers as the device name when my other devices see it on the network. How do I change this name to something else? (like we change the computer name on a windows computer)

thanks

edit /etc/hosts and /etc/hostname
(as root)

Don't forget to also use 'hostname' command. The 'proper' way to update the hostname file in any UNIX/Linux environment is to go as root and use 'hostname ravage' (for example, if you wanted to name it 'ravage').

The hostname file should change to that name and other elements that government the hostname should change along with it as well. (Although, as I'm checking it on my own device, it doesn't seem to alter either file but it does seem to reflect the name change on the command prompt and on the network. Boggling. Maybe you need to do a 'hostname ravage' and then reboot if the files are generated at boot time? I haven't tried this yet so I'm just throwing it out there as a guess.

Normally, on a desktop, you would use just 'hostname' to do it right.

Hmm oddly it resets the device name on a reboot.

Yeah.. Doesn't quite work the way danramos said... the command "hostname" only sets it for this session..

modifying the two files responsible as briand suggested sets it permanently.

I stand corrected! I usually do both when I change hostnames ...I've never done the "/etc/init.d/hostname.sh start" to kick it in. Thanks!!

...and now I'll go quietly stand in a corner. :)

thankyou for all the replys :) . i had a feeling it would'nt be as simple as changing the name as in the bluetooth device properties.
