help with swap

Hi,

Right now, I am dual-booting my n800 from a flash card. The swap is a file in the first partition of the same card, and is of 128mb.

As far as I understand, if I use a swap partition instead of a swap file, the speed of the swap memory should increase.

I am currently upgrading from chinook to diablo (from one 16gb flash to another), so I formatted my destination card as follows:
mmcblk1p1: 13500mb, fat32
mmcblk1p2: 2000mb, ext2 (system)
mmcblk1p3: 500mb, linux swap

Now, my question is how to make the system use this swap partition as default instead of the swap file. The "swapon -a" command didn't help me much (according to "free").

Any help would be appreciated

Thank you

Re: help with swap

Did you first do 'mkswap' on the partition?

BTW, from what others have said here, it doesn't make a difference anymore if you use a swap partition or a file (particularly with an SD card I should think), because the kernel will initially translate the file to the physical layer so that it sees the same as what it sees in a partition.

BTW, swapon -a will only add swap space which has been defined in /etc/fstab.
swapon /dev/name-of-swap-partition will activate it directly (and it'll last until boot)

Re: help with swap

The easiest way I know to do swap partition is with PB's excellent easy dual boot. It gives you the ability to set up swap patrtition before you do the dual boot partition. I added a 1gb partition and it really helped.
