The stupidest move Nokia could make

I have been thinking about how I will be one of the first to buy the next NXXX device coming out since it will have 3G.

Im just assumming that it will have cellphone capability however lately it occurred to me that this does not have to be the case. The best case would be a sim slot where 3G would be provided from ATT or TMo network which would allow cellphone calls also.

Nokia could instead though, like OQO, provide 3G capability via a sim card minus cellphone capability.

This would force use to use Skype which is very expensive if everyone you call is not to another Skype user.

This would be a horrible move on Nokia's part and would result in continued slow sales for NXXX.

I mean how can you have such a powerful OS like Memeo but leave out the one piece that would result in millions more units sold.

I guess we will have to see what happens.

I think you missed a few posts around here, Anthony.

Why do so many of you assume Nokia wants to dominate the cellphone market with Maemo devices and sell billions of N900s?

Couldn't it be they only want to make the best device for an attractive niche market?

Or couldn't it be they want to keep Nxxx-devices away from the mainstream because it's meant for a time when the market changes completely?

Fanboys need high sales figures. Nokia doesn't - yet.

I thought a week ago the stupidest move they could make was leaving out 3g? Now, because they didn't make that, something else becomes stupider just to take its place?

I'd say the mistake you're supposing they might make isn't really it; the mistake is including the WWAN hardware as an integral part of the tablet, not a separate module. If it was a separate module, people could install whatever card they liked, and you'd have to stop trolling find something other than WWAN to troll about.

But just a couple points here, because even trolls shouldn't starve.
  • It wouldn't force anyone to use Skype.
    • There are other, and better, VoIP options than Skype.
    • It wouldn't even force anyone to use VoIP -- there are other options, like affordable watchphones with lousy data connectivity (which would no longer be an issue with data on the tablet), or ordinary phones. Or not making voice calls on the go -- some people actually don't have cellphones, you know.
  • Skype is not horribly expensive compared to cell rates.

Texrat, sorry.

Catch me up please. I sneek online at work, do somethin, and then quickly log off so no none sees me online.

For a start, read the mammoth Maemo 5 thread.

I don't think I buy that--as I recall seeing your name on some relevant threads (the 'What would you realistically like to see in an N900?' comes to mind immediately). For reference: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...archid=3187289

"This would force use to use Skype which is very expensive if everyone you call is not to another Skype user."

Benson, you are the biggest troll in this forum. A troll posts controversial and irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the intention of provoking other users into an emotional response[1] or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion.[2]

Benson, this is you. 100%.

For example, your post above:

"But just a couple points here, because even trolls shouldn't starve." (insulting and trolish.)
and
"there are other options, like affordable watchphones with lousy data connectivity" (are you an idiot and a troll?)
and
"not making voice calls on the go -- some people actually don't have cellphones, you know." (yes its clear you must be an idiot and a troll)
and
"Skype is not horribly expensive compared to cell rates." (just do the math bimbo for calling a landline during the week from 9am to 5pm.)
and
"the mistake is including the WWAN hardware as an integral part of the tablet, not a separate module. If it was a separate module, people could install whatever card they liked, and you'd have to stop trolling find something other than WWAN to troll about." (you have developed emotionally no further than my 10 year old son)
