How do I actually install stuff on my external card?
 

Hello all,

I have a 8GB card in my n810...

When I install stuff it doesn't give me any option to install on the external card instead of the internal memory.

I put folders on the card but can't figure out how to get my device to install on it.

Ya, already found that...it also brings up that it slows everything down and is prone to errors...

I just wanted to treat my external card as another drive.

I have not done any time testing lately, but jffs2 (flash) is a compressed filesystem and things will load slower from there. You can install ext3 install-tools-ad.tgz fairly easily. You can do ext2 very easy with install-tools.deb or install-tools-N810e.deb.

If you choose ext2, the install-tools debs, when you boot to flash, if will automatically fsck your filesystems and play a wav when complete.

I think the OP wants to boot to flash but use the card as an extension of the root file system. Probably no less complex than cloning and booting from a partition. I've seen some stuff around for that (unionfs?), but haven't really looked into it...

Well I get what he was asking for, but It was apparent that the information he was conveying is incorrect. So I wanted to try to correct the confusion. Yes unionfs was an option, but I don't think its been supported for a while.

It's an option, but a stupid one. It greatly reduces stability and battery life, while offering zero benefit over just booting straight from SD.

The OP is likely confusing another article on the wiki that outlines that method with the one I linked him to.

But, if he doesn't actually want the help. . . .
