How to play audio at different speed

hi, any body knows how to play audio (mp3) at slower or faster speed? Any apps available? I saw a simple command line apps called 'yatm' (yet another time machine) and it works in ubuntu nicely. But I can't get it to work in easy debian (though it installed properly).

Any help appreciated! :)

Re: How to play audio at different speed

mplayer can do it with command line option -speed <factor>. Factor can be between 0.01 and 100.
1 is original speed.

Hi thanks, indeed it works -- but mplayer changes the pitch (sounds like mickey mouse on speed up). The yatm changes the speed without changing the pitch, so it still sounds natural even on faster speed.

Would you please consider voting for, and possibly adding a comment to, Bug # 3198?

It's substantially below realtime, IIRC, but sox can do it for general sound files with the standard windowing, time-scaling, and overlapping.

If you only want mp3s, and are content with ratios of small integers (so it can be done by just repeating and dropping mp3 frames), mpg123 can do it for mp3s with -d and -h, and should have almost no penalty.

Re: How to play audio at different speed

I found it in a new version of mplayer:
https://launchpad.net/~rvm/+archive
* the option to change the playback speed without altering the pitch will work (thanks to the new scaletempo filter)

It does not work in maemo mplayer rc1.2. Any body knows where I can get a version with this scaletempo filter ?

EDIT: Here are the scaletempo patches to mplayer rc1.2:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...kage_id=279916
Any body kind enough to patch it and make it available for everybody? Thank you in advance!

The sound quality using mpg123 with a time scale of anything between 1 & 2 (say -d 3 -h 2) is pretty poor. -d 2 is fine but it is too fast. If only someone could get scaletempo audio filter to work in maemo mplayer (or vlc)
