Home page: Why gray text on orange?
 

It is very hard to read and totally unnecessary. It appears since the OS upgrade my tablet won't go past this color scheme on the homepage, so I now cannot read the homepage any more.

i would definitely have to agree on that....luckily i use the classic theme so i never have to see it

The controls to select the color scheme are "hidden" at the bottom left of the webpage.

I also use Classic as it is the easiest on my eyes.

I presume the OP is referring to the homepage rather than the forums.

When the homepage is being drawn there is a brief flicker where the background colour of the recent posts section is orange with grey text i.e.:

It seems the OP isn't able to get past that to where it displays the recent posts in a dark grey background with blue text.
Does clearing cache and cookies help?
