XTerminal Editing Help
I need to edit a file within XTerminal but I do not know how to do this.
To explain a little more, my tablet is not showing the "Switch to Offline Mode" option in the power button menu. I had this problem once several months back and I just reflashed to fix it. I'm looking for other solutions this time and in another thread, namely this one, tell me to edit a file called "/var/lib/mce/mode" and put the word "normal" at the top of it. Sounds simple enough except I'm in the newbie forum here because I don't even know how to "edit". Any help would be greatly appreciated. |
Re: XTerminal Editing Help
In Control panel if you hit the menu key, under "Tools" is "Restore original settings"...
Would this help? |
Re: XTerminal Editing Help
Thanks for your reply!
I just gave that a try though and it did not restore the "Switch to Offline Mode" option that is missing. |
Re: XTerminal Editing Help
Well I think what you need is a way to gain root and a text editor.
So if the "/var/lib/mce/mode" needs root access to edit it you need something like rootsh. The actual magic happens with a text editor like nano or vi or vim. So install one of them, I like and use nano. Then to edit you type, if root access is needed, in xterm. sudo gainroot Then to edit "/var/lib/mce/mode" nano /var/lib/mce/mode Then you type "normal" on the lines of text and save the file. Before you use sudo gainroot see if you can edit and save the file without it first. If you accidentally change the permissions of the file you can have a big headache. |
