Saving websites to memory to reduce browsing overhead
I searched for something regarding 'offline browsing', etc. I will be using my N810 for work to get values for cars. I go thru Manheims website and use a drop-down list for each make and model. Rather than wait for the info to come back from the Manheim server each time I would like to find a way to cache those make and model drop-downs.
I know there are ways to 'cache' a website on a desktop, just wondering if there is a way to do it on the N810. This would help with my browsing speed and only poll the Manheim website for the sale data which changes constantly. One thing to note is that my account with Manheim is on a https connection. Thanks for any help, if I need to clear up my muddled description :D , let me know. |

1/ http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...light=squashfs
or my solution 2/ a/ get squashfs http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...light=squashfs b/ use a website copier to download c/ make a squashfs file of the downloaded website d/ put that file on the tablet and loopback mount it I've done the latter successfully with the CIA World Factbook quite happily, and even the whole lo-fi forum of oesf.org! It's quite efficient way of carrying round a huge number of pages. |
Re: Saving websites to memory to reduce browsing overhead
I like your solution better, seems a little easier for a linux noob. Just to clarify:
-I get online and go to the https Manheim site. -I enter my username and password -The squashfs solution takes over and serves the known pages (year/make/model) which do not change -My dropdown lists should load faster because squashfs has the files locally -Squashfs will not have the pricing info saved so it will parse the Manheim server to get me the data via my internet connection Sound reasonable? My N810 will be arriving Tues or Weds...woohoo! |
Re: Saving websites to memory to reduce browsing overhead
i'd've thought the tricky bit was downloading the web pages rather than storing them. The N810 has a couple of GB onboard which should be plenty. To do the download you need something like wget from http://maemo.org/downloads/product/wget/ I've used it myself to pull down websites on my PC. I don't know how it will cope wih username protected pages, but GNU tools are sually pretty clever.
Good luck! |
Re: Saving websites to memory to reduce browsing overhead
Thank you all for the quick response. I can't wait to get my N810 and get started. Will post an update when I find out how to do it or if I get stuck :)
