Is that same as omap 3540 to be used in n900?

I hope nokia gets it out before the iphone 3.

No, Nokia is using the OMAP3430 which is a Cortex A8.

The Cortex A9 is a multi-core (well, multiple CPU core) variant of the Cortex A8 and is slated for early 2010—still a long ways off.

Man, if the Cortex A9 follows the footsteps of the A8 and uses less power, can you image 4 freaking cores? In your pocket?

I read about AMD's latest processor, or Intel's latest processor with a maximum power draw of 200 Watts or so. Then I think of all the things I can do with my puny OMAP2 tablet that does everything with around 1 watt or so. Is there a comparison? :)

There is a bogus comparison indeed. No recent Intel or AMD CPU has a TDP of 200W. The embedded Intel and AMD CPUs use under 100W. And this is only the CPU, not the entire architecture. TDP has different meaning at AMD and Intel, and idle W of AMD is much better than Intel. These Intel and AMD CPUs are meant for desktop, workstation and servers. They provide much more power than your OMAP2. You can underclock them, and use technologies like SpeedStep to save power.

If you want to compare you compare with stuff inside laptops such as AMD Turion, Intel Core 2 Duo or stuff inside netbooks Intel Celeron, Intel Atom or stuff inside embedded computers AMD Geode, VIA Nano, NVidia Tegra (uses ARM11), or other low-end ARM, POWER and MIPS, or other embedded SoC.

According to a review at ars technica, the latest Phenom II X4 940 (3GHz) draws 218.9W. I understand that the tablets can't do everything that the Phenom II does. I'm more focused on all the things that it can do. Browsing web pages, voice over ip, video over ip, instant messaging are all things that people do on their desktops. And I'm really not even trying to say that the Cortex A8 or A9 is the best at power consumption in it's class, just that the amount of processing power that will fit in my pocket will be astounding very shortly.

The AM2+ version? Competes with Core 2 Quatro and Nehelem. HIGH END, NON-MOBILE CONSUMER COMPUTERS. Ie. for gamers. Do you have any clue how much faster it is compared OMAP3? That it serves an entirely different goal than OMAP3? Like I put forth in my previous post...? AMD required an answer to Nehalem and Intel's quad core E-series. The Phenom II (AM2+, later AM3) is just that.

Nor the other way around. They serve an entirely different goal.

You can compare a netbook with a laptop. You can compare a mobile phone with a tablet. They still serve a different goal, but they're more alike. They overlap. A desktop or a server and a NIT hardly overlap...

One does not need a Phenom II to do web browsing, VoIP, and such. A gamer who plays e.g. CoD can do this with his Phenom II easily, but its not the reason he bought a Phenom II. There are small embedded devices for that using VIA Nano, AMD Geode, or some embedded or SoC CPU/arch which can be used for such nice purposes. There are nice machines which normally use 1 or 2 W such as CherryPal. And, ofcourse, ARM-based platforms. Including OMAP3.

Next time, please compare it to a Cray. We'll have more fun laughing at such jokes...
