Charging/running N800 on an external USB power supply

I have the original Nokia USB charging cable CA-100. When I try to charge or run my N800 via a USB charger or USB battery pack it does NOT work. The USB battery pack is an APC Mobile USB Rechargeable Power Pack (UPB10-CN). It's a quality battery and comes with a quality USB AC charger.

The idea was to run the N800 on the APC battery pack when the internal battery runs out of juice while watching movies. It will also charge the thing at the same time. The APC battery should give many more running hours.

BTW, I have the same problem when I try to charge/run my Nokia phone. The Nokia CA-100 USB cable charges/runs both through a computer without any problem.

Please help!

Depends what the problem is. If the battery can handle the current, but is not putting out quite enough voltage, a voltage booster could help.

If, otoh, the battery pack won't output enough current, the extra draw from the booster will likely make it worse.

If I recall correctly, the APC external battery packs automatically shut down their USB power sockets when they detect they aren't in use, and the amount of power the Internet Tablets draw is below that threshold.

Ah... Well, if so, a boost regulator might pull enough to help, although so might, e.g., a hub and whatever USB peripherals are handy...

It shuts off every 15min. If you press the button on the battery pack it will give you another 15min. On some of my gadgets it runs indefinitely.

The issue is that the N800 would start charge for a couple of seconds then says cannot charge. Tonight I'll get the exact error message. Same thing happens on the Nokia E51 phone.

Wait, I thought you couldn't charge the 800/810 via usb. Or is it just the N810 that you can't charge through usb?

I charge my N810 with a CA-100 adapter when traveling.

BTW, I have nothing to do with deal extreme, just a satisfied customer.

I remember someone once posted you could put a jumper from the charger jack to the USB jack for the 5 volts and then you could charge while hooked to USB (without using the charger jack). Can anyone find that old thread?

Information on modifying the 770 could be used as a basis for work on later tablets.
