POP3 is now available for hotmail!

Great news!
As of today, pop3 is now available for free for hotmail (and live)!!!
http://arstechnica.com/journals/micr...s-live-hotmail

For now, its only for United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Japan, Spain, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands.

You guys from US will have to wait a bit

Since I m from Canada I tired it with Claw Mail and was able to get all my old and new mails.
But for so reason I can t send a mail; it says that there s a problem with smtp server; but I did everything right; I think.

Any idea?

Available again. This was available years ago when I used Hotmail. For free indeed.

You can also use Windows Live for e-mail notification. I'm pretty sure Pidgin supports this as well.

And, POP3 sucks. Use IMAP4 already. Preferably over SSL. For SMTP support you must have the correct settings. Verify them.

IMAP is not always a option, nor is SSL, sadly...

Try switching the SMTP port number to 587, if your ISP is Bell, the default port number doesn't usually work, but 587 should. Did for me at least.

Hotmail Live must have Ip specific software running as I had the same Error message as Unholyplayer when sending as I am in Cyprus at the moment but have a UK account. I switched over to my UK VPN on the tablet and the message was sent. Retrieving messages works from anywhere I think it's just the sending of messages that is IP specific.

That it using the hotmail SMTP.

But when using Bell as an ISP, the default port for SMTP doesn't work for some reason. I had to use 587 for the port number for my GMail account to send emails in both Thunderbird and Modest. When I got an error for Hotmail's SMTP after following the settings used on ArsTechnica, I tried port # 587 and it worked.

I really have no clue how it is nowadays, but I got this to work when it was still hotmail.com and Qmail...

To access a Windows Live Hotmail Plus account in any desktop email program:
Create a new account using the following settings:
POP (incoming) server: pop3.live.com
POP port: 995
POP SSL required: yes
POP user name: your complete Windows Live Hotmail address (including "@hotmail.com", "@live.com", etc.)
POP password: your Windows Live Hotmail password
SMTP (outgoing) server: smtp.live.com
SMTP port: 25
SMTP SSL required: yes
SMTP authentication: yes
SMTP user name: your full Windows Live Hotmail email address
SMTP password: your Windows Live Hotmail password
You might find a better or more accurate source via Google. Look especially at the date the article/howto was written or last modified.

Bell blocks outgoing port 25, except to its own SMTP servers.

The situation is complicated in that Bell's newest email systems are run by Hotmail, so port 25 may get through to the standard Hotmail smtp servers. I think they still require TLS to be enabled for Bell accounts, and their implementation uses port 587 if I recall correctly.
