convert video in linux for the n810

I was just wondering. I found Nokia's video converter, but it only works on windows and mac.

Is there a conversion tool for Linux? I remember back in the day (geez, I sound like a geezer), there was something called 770convert, which I used for my Zaurus. Is there something similar today or should I dust that off?

Thanks,

It was renamed to tablet-encode: http://mediautils.garage.maemo.org/

I've heard Knots could work too.

Hmmm. This appears to run on your tablet iteself? I thought you could use the greater power of a desktop to convert the files to an Nxxx-friendly format, with a smaller size as well.

Can it be run on a desktop?

The client runs on tablet, but the actual work is done on the desktop. You just queue the files you want transcoded from the client, press play and files get transcoded on desktop and transfered to device. But it's using a format that doesn't really lower the filesize so it could use a new profile for transfer that is a nice trade-off between quality and size.

You could always just do it with mencoder if you're using Linux. Here's a guide complete with command line to make that happen.

Tutorial: Simple PMP media encoding/resizing with mencoder

That's pretty much what the old 770-encode script did; it was just a perl wrapper that called mencoder with a bunch of preset arguments for various levels of quality. I still use it on my mythbox to re-encode video/recordings/etc to put on my N800 and take on long flights/holidays/etc; works just fine and is nice and quick/easy to use.

...and is still what tablet-encode does :-)

Newer versions have made it easier to define your own presets, and improved DVD ripping.

The definitive reference on the various end-user conversion methods is in the wiki:
