Pidgin always sets itself to "Away"

Why is it that whenever Pidgin is on the status bar, it is always set to Away.

I try to set it on Available but the second I minimize, it sets itself to Away.

Even when I'm in the middle of a conversation, it sets itself to Away.

On another note, if pidgin is minimized and I click on it on the status bar, everything on the screen disappears except the Home button.
Until, I click the Home button, nothing else will work then everything comes back. Screen flickers alot during this process.

I'm not quite sure the cause of these problems, but I have encountered them. For the "away" indicator, I went into the settings and removed the "auto away" option. I haven't yet found anything to fix when the screen blanks, other than what you described (or tapping/holding the Swap button on the tablet)

one option for avoiding the screen blanks is to turn of the tray support in pidgin.

yes, that means it will continually show icons in the sidebar, but imo thats a much better place to have it.

btw, pidgin is not the only app with the problem. im guessing there is a interaction issue between apps that use the usual tray support found in most linux desktops, and maemo.

I've tried looking for this option in Preferences and every place I could find and still don't find it.

Where is it located?

the preference window cant fit all its tabs in one row, and puts arrows at the ends rather then show multiple rows.

use the left arrow to scroll all the way, and you should find a tab labeled status/away...

Well, it seems Pidgin 2.4.3 does not work anymore with ICQ.
Is anyone maintaining Pidgin for Maemo? The upstream version is already at 2.5.5!
