Help with Wayfinder Navigation licensing

 To my great dismay I just found out today that license keys for Wayfinder Navigator (turn-by-turn live guidance option) can no longer be purchased for the Internet Tablet. An e-mail response from customer service stated that the product is no longer supported.

I'm leaving for Europe to rent a car this Friday and was relying on GPS guidance via the Nokia 810; I bought the unit only a year ago mainly for that purpose.

What am I to do? Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Re: Help with Wayfinder Navigation licensing

At least for me wayfinder online shop is still selling the product https://shop.wayfinder.com/category_show.php?catid=15

Other option is to buy used one. For example this should work also with N810 and as a bonus you get bluetooth GPS unit.

edit: Navicore Navigator software in the box itself doesn't work with N810 but the activation code should work. So all you need is the activation code.

Re: Help with Wayfinder Navigation licensing

Thank you so much Mikkov for your prompt reply. I tried your link when I read your post and, wouldn't you know it, it worked(!) I'm not sure what's going on, because for the past 30 hours it wouldn't work. So then I sent an e-mail yesterday to customer service in Sweden and got this reply:

"Dear Sir,
Thank you for contacting Wayfinder.
Unfortunately we have stopped selling the product Wayfinder Navigator for Nokia
Internet Tablet.
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact us again.
With best regards,
Jenni J.
Wayfinder Helpdesk"

Earlier this morning, I sent a second e-mail to the north American helpdesk, this time, expressing my serious discontent with the short-lived service. I haven't obtained a response from them yet.

Finally, I wrote this post a short while ago, so between now and then, something got changed on their website for the link to work again.

Anyway, I quickly purchased the license after your reply, while the "door was open," but it certainly doesn't give much confidence in the future (with regards to Nokia internet tablet users).

Now I've got to find updated maps via PC; the download speed via the table is excruciatingly slow.

Thanks again.

You are not alone !

Visited the forums tonight to report exactly the same problem, and saw this thread.

I tried on Friday 13th !! to buy a navigation license, and the web-site wouldn't let me.

I e-mailed them over the weekend, and got an identical reply.

I also phoned the helpdesk on Monday, and they told me the same thing, and that the ability to purchase licenses had been withdrawn.

And this evening it's working, a result, I've now got my navigation for a trip to the US this week.

Dear nigelaedwards,

:) Thanks for your show of solidarity. Don't you love that we live in an era now where we create stress in ourselves over whether our GPS works or not a few days prior to our next trip?... This morning I contemplated going back to the printed maps (!) - probably a good back-up to have anyway.

I'm still perturbed by this experience, leaving me with little confidence over the future of the device. I bought it originally because of the GPS and the licensing flexibility (buy only for as long as you need it - and get map updates for free), along with the nifty benefit of being able to make Skype phone calls at 2 cents a minute from anywhere in the world. But to alleviate travel "stress" in the future, I may alas opt to give in and buy a dedicated GPS unit after this trip.

Well, I have not even activated my 7 day trial yet. Saving it for the next trip I might need it for. But it seems to me that if they decide to stop supporting the software on the Nokia tablets they should release a patch that allows the wayfinder part to just work. They certainly can not make any money from a product they no longer sell and a LOT of people bought the tablet for the GPS ability and have paid for Wayfinder for years because of it.

You look at the costs however ($120.00 89.99EUR for 36 months) and you can buy a very nice Garmin with turn by turn directions for that. Top of the line? No, but I guarentee a MUCH faster aquisition of sats...

http://tinyurl.com/cl4s9x

This one is 119.99 and it is louder, faster and somewhat less fragile than the N810...

I love the N810 a lot and I use it for a lot of different things, but DANG that is a lot of money just for turn by turn directions, what was wayfinder thinking?

Re: Help with Wayfinder Navigation licensing

I know what you mean, Tobiasj. Speaking of Garmin, I saw a product option on their website called NuMaps Lifetime https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=256&pID=33381

The US coverage is a one-time cost of 120$, the European is $140 and the combined US-EU is $150. That is certainly a very appealing proposition, considering the reputation and likelihood of Garmin vs Wayfinder to remain in business. And price-wise, the $150 lifetime option surpasses anything that Wayfind currently offers. I initially went with Wayfinder because of the option to only license one month at a time, which makes a lot of sense for infrequent travel. But it may not be an existing option any longer before too long. Besides, there is a concern that the maps are not getting updated like they once did. Finally, this business about splitting up countries in Europe is becoming a bit of a pain when doing cross-border touring... and losing the programmed favorites.

The new Garmin 1300 series (esp. 1370T) coming out in May could just be the ticket for me when I get back.

Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts on this topic. And thanks again Mikkov for relieving my anxiety for the time being!

Re: Help with Wayfinder Navigation licensing

You could try ebay, there's a seller there constantly peddling EU lifetime licenses for Wayfinder, and he might e-mail you the license key right away if you use buy it now option.

Re: Help with Wayfinder Navigation licensing

 Well, after all this saga, here's an interesting update... a new reply today from Wayfinder's help desk:

"Dear Sir,

Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately we had received incorrect information and there was a temporary malfunction in the web shop.
We are still selling the product Wayfinder Navigator for Nokia Internet Tablet. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact us again.

With best regards,

Jenni J.
Wayfinder Helpdesk"

Where is Jenni J.? India or Scandinavia? I hope the company realizes that a communication snafu such as this can cost them a lot of business.

You've got the decision making backwards. They didn't decide to stop supporting the software on the tablets; Nokia decided to stop supporting the [N8x0] tablets.
