Download section of maemo.org

Hi all,

just idling and waiting for BIG news...

Every time I enter the www.maemo.org web site I check the download section to see what is new and what is "hot". The "fresh" software changes almost continuously (it certainly is automated). In most cases the software that is reported as "fresh" is not new, just updated. Wouldn't it be preferable to have a "recently updated" section and a new (or "fresh") section for new stuff? Also, the "hot" software has not changed for the past two or three months. After a while out does it still deserve the term "hot"? Maybe users (and developers) could appreciate to have some rotation.

I beg you excuse me if I have come up with something wrong, senseless, dated or typically newbie...:D

Regards,
Antonio

Thank you indeed fms, I was not aware of that bug report.

My point is related but different. I am suggesting to change the content of the fresh section (and add a new software section) and update more frequently the "hot" section. Then there are several changes that can be made that are discussed in the bug.

Antonio

Well, we are not getting that many totally new packages, most updates are to existing packages, so personally I do not think this is worth it. A list of 10-15 freshly updated packages should suffice.

Totally agree on this one. The packages on the Hot category list should be rotated daily, based on some semi-smart algorithm.

Karma for applications should address this problem

I do not think karma will fix the described problem. Instead, it will lead to one of two outcomes:

1. A bunch of most popular applications will be stuck in the Hot list.
2. The Hot list will mimic the Fresh list (because fresh stuff is always downloaded more).

So, instead, I would suggest using karma [liberally] to create a pool of popular applications and rotate a dozen of applications from that pool in the Hot list.
