Improvements on the Maemo Summit registration

All in all I'm happy with the registration system we had last year, showing in real time who was registering and having the sponsorship module integrated.

Someproposals to improve:

- Include tshirt size man/woman to calculate much better the shirts variations we need to buy.

- 'main focus' in checkboxes with multiple selection:
  • Applications and user features
  • Application development
  • Platform development
  • Maemo community

- Users should be able to edit their profile to add more information.

Some ideas to improve, out of my head:

More ideas come to mind but they would complicate the development. According to the ongoing discussions it is good to have the registration open asap. Shirt size would be the only requirement I would put to the registration opening but if you have more ideas...

Are we talking registration as in community or new user? Are new users allowed to turn up for a new t-shirt? or is it a 'your names not down' affair?

For me the best course of action would be to drop the skinny fit from all the t-shirts, the small fits my 6 year old son and XL makes me feel fat!

Sounds sensible. Was it X-Fade/bergie who did the software last year? Or was it non-midgard?

From memory it was all midgard but I could be wrong.

And a request for kid sizes as well.

heh... Quim gave me Maemo shirts for my kids a couple of years ago. My youngest wore his to school and the other kids wondered if a "ma emo" was a new category of dark-clothes-wearing teen...

yes, it's a Midgard module and it works together with your maemo.org profile.

In order to organize things we need to request registration. We are aiming at 300 people and we should be able to host more appropriatedly if they register well in advance. People popping up in the last minute should be able to join the sessions but things like food, shirts etc might not be granted.

The merchandising thread is better for shirt size discussions. :)

Like Quim said, we need to manage amount of participants. Not only for fire safety reasons, but also to ensure that we have the community and its contributors well represented. Not that we will be serving anything illegal in Amsterdam, but I'd prefer if our sponsored funds are used for the community not a coincidental visitor. We also need to have some registration milestones in order forecast the final amount of participants. Last year the number of participants grew dramatically in the last week and we ran out of food and almost space. I personally carried some 20 or so chairs to the main room before we opened the show at 09.00. We need to manage the registration in a smarter way with some bonus for early sign-up.

Encouraging early registration a good idea. Unfortunately, financial discount ain't gonna cut it (Sun also extended their "early bird" discount right up to the day before JavaOne, "in light of the current financial circumstances").

Perhaps some form of limited merchandising, possibly also available to buy? A stylish jacket, carry case or whatever. Something which'd be too pricey to give out to hundreds of people, but the first 100 registrants get a $NICE_THING.

Re: Improvements on the Maemo Summit registration

Apart for shirt gender & size, another think we can ask in the registration is 'main focus' in checkboxes with multiple selection:

- Applications and user features
- Application development
- Platform development
- Maemo community

This way we can have a rough idea of the interests of the participants, allowing us to locate much better sessions in rooms.
