Couch Surfer - keyboard/mouse on N8x0 or iPhone to control PC/Mac

Couch Surfer runs in background on your PC or Mac. It runs a small web server that enables your Nokia N800 or iPhone to control you keyboard and mouse from a web browser. |
Re: Couch Surfer - keyboard/mouse on N8x0 or iPhone to control PC/Mac
Well, I am typing this message on my desktop PC (which is windows XP) using my N800 as the keyboard via Couch Surfer. In fact, I navigated to a tab, googled my way to this page, thanked jself, and placed the cursor in this message box >> all without touching my PC"s keyboard or mouse. So it definitely works!
Now I'm back on my regular keyboard, to finish the message. Partly because there are a few keystrokes missing, like an apostrophe and a dash. It's also slow, partly because almost all keys apart from letters are on a different screen, and then you cycle through to the third screen to get to the mouse area. Obviously this isn't what you would want to do for writing emails. But it's general functionality is excellent. The lags -- for mouse/cursor responsiveness, for example -- are not bad. And there are some nice touches, like a button that takes you to Google's main page and a vertical area next to the mousepad area that serves as a scroll bar, without your having to move the cursor on the PC over to the scrollbar. For controlling a media center displayed on a big TV screen, I think this would be quite convenient. I'll have to compare it to BlueMaemo later. BTW, it works with MicroB but not with tear. |

For those having trouble using Couchsurfer on a 64-bit Linux OS, simply replace libjdic.so & libtray.so with the files in this archive. These files should be in your installation directory (default is /opt/couchsurfer).
I am no linux expert just followed the relevant instructions here. Of course, you can always compile jdic yourselves I tried it this afternoon and I am very pleased with it. I especially like its responsiveness. Feature Requests 1.I would like support for the hardware keyboard of N810 (shouldn't be hard) 2. A way to change the wikipedia, google, xbmc keys to user-defined functions. 3. Some sort of panel item to know it's running... |

I gotta try this when I get home. This will make my Apple TV replacement (Powerbook G4) useful!

I use LogMeIn.com as something similar!

Just tested on my Intel Macbook. Nice indeed. Tear= nogo can't put in the ":" sign (N800). I like that mousing area view.

Bluemaemo is better because it does not require the server part, yet has all the functionality. But you do need bluetooth...
