Samsung I8910 Omnia HD.

The biggest(?) Norwegian phone-centric web page gave this phone six out of six and claimed it was the most wicked phone ever, and that it has no competition what so ever.

To us, this phone may be of interest because it's, well...
Big and fast?

- Price: about £500 as far as I can tell, unlocked.
- Screen: AMOLED, 3,7 inches.
- Resolution: Only 360 x 640. Y'know, Symbian...
- Operating system: Symbian OS 9.4 Series 60 5th Edition
- Dimentions: 58 x 123 x 12.9 millimetres
- Weight: 144 grams battery included
- CPU: Texas Instruments OMAP 3430, 600 MHz.
- Slot: MicroSDHC, up to 32GB.
- Connectivity: Amongst others, WiFi, Super 3G, A2DP
- GPS: aye.
- Web browser: named...? Same as on 5800 xm. Gets somewhat good reviews.
- Flash support: aye.
- Java support: aye.
- Camera: Not the same as on the N810.

This looks like a killer phone and the one review I've seen only mentioned the Iphone once, which must be a record.

I must say though, I was a bit put off by the screen resolution and the web browser. Is it still possible to get Opera Mobile for Symbian? I dunno. It seems like a pretty good phone. The resolution says it's no eBook reader, though.

Err... It has a screen larger than the future N900 and just 25 DPI less than the N810 (200 vs 225). So it's actually pretty close to the NITs in this regard. The 160 pixels you lose would not translate into more lines, unless you plan on reading with a magnifying glass. Web is a different story.

140 pixels... I lose 153,600 pixels, or 40 percent of the pixels. These pixels could be used to write out smaller letters - that I rather prefer actually, I'm using 80% size when reading an ebook - but they could also be used to increase the readability of the same sized letters by using outline, etc.

40% of the pixels, significant IMO.

I understand the point of DPI, I'm just saying the difference is not that large for the purposes of *book reading* - it's a ~10% DPI diffence, hardly a difference that separates something from being great for ebooks from something that's not for ebooks.

For the record, the kindle (which is kind of an etalon ebook reader) has a lower DPI (160-170 IIRC) than this Omnia and it can't even use tricks like subpixel rendering.

Yeah, I haven't actually seen this in practice so the difference may not be as imporant as "40% fewer pixels" may indicate. Either way, this product seems quite good.

It's symbian with a layer ontop though, like the HTCs over WMo, and well... The review I mentioned of it is raving. I could translate some of it, but I am betting there are english reviews enough to read.

To say it like this, reading what they said about it made me strike out Diamond2 from my want list, and pressed Hero down one spot. The prices are comparable.

That said - I would probably rather have Android than Symbian. And in a year I am certain Android has improved much more than Symbian has.

The only two things I miss from Symbian are:

• Full SyncML suite (Android, via Funambol, only has contacts syncing, but I need calendar)
• Full Bluetooth suite (esp. DUN and FTP, but HID, BIP, and PAN would be nice too)
