N900 Streaming Video

Does anyone know if http streaming or rtsp streaming video will be supported for video playback?

I have a couple of links to videos if someone with a N900 wants to test them out.

Give links, I can check.

Also, the other direction works too -- Qik is available albeight currently it is not obeying libplayback policies properly so it clashes with stock Camera UI over camera resources. This will be fixed hopefully before release.

Re: N900 Streaming Video

I checked first link you've sent me. I entered it into browser and it asked me to either launch Mediaplayer or save it. I launched Mediaplayer and it played without visible glitches.

The connection is mobile broadband, 1Mbps.

There is one issue though -- Mediaplayer's buffering is not adapted to the type of content being streamed, so for .mp4 video it does not buffer enough to play without interruption. So now and then it paused for buffering data. It plays without interrupts for about 5-10 seconds. This I think is related to an issue already reported back from 770 times.

Second link was less successful. Mediaplayer was launched to handle rtsp but the stream never succeeds. This might be both codec and connection issue.

I'll check with Mediaplayer people on both issues.

Re: N900 Streaming Video

Thanks for checking the links for me. If anyone else wants to play around with them here they are:

http streaming or progressive download: (iPhone style streaming)
http://cdn.zoovision.com/zoovision/KibaEp1N900.mp4
Curious to see how it works over wifi

rtsp version one 3gp with h.264 encoding
rtsp://stream.zoovision.com/KibaEp1n900.3gp

rtsp version two without h.264 encoding (This works on most Nokia devices via realplayer)
rtsp://stream.zoovision.com/KibaEp1n9002.3gp

Thanks for your help as we want to release a few video apps for the N900 and want to see what will give the best user experience.

If anyone is interested in helping out with the apps let me know.

Sean

Re: N900 Streaming Video

Sean,

we'll check 3gp case. Networking streaming in case of HTTP is relying on ranges support in HTTP/1.1 to give optimal performance and also expects that server side is doing correct job. Most HTTP servers mmap or similarly prepare files for interactive use if they are accessed through HTTP/1.1 ranges (i.e. if server has reported that it allows to use byte-based ranges to specify part of resource being accessed).

In this case it does but probably my 1mbps connection had some latency issues as well.

Re: N900 Streaming Video

Jack6428,

the supplied playlists refer to files with unknown codecs.

I'm not going to test every single link you are sending to me as there is no way to supply all codecs with N900 sales release. For cases where some free software or open source gstreamer codec is available for formats you expect to get played, MediaPlayer will be able to play such files if you'll install codecs onto the device.

Our Gstreamer guys promised to provide some documentation on Maemo.org, outlining steps to enable any gstreamer plugin support on Maemo 5. Once plugins are installed and MIME types for them are registered with Tracker, standard MediaPlayer will work with those codecs.

I hope community support for extending list of available codecs will come through Maemo.org Extras repositories. Of course, there are limits as to what hardware could allow without certain optimizations on Neon and DSP fronts (and even there we have some limits) but overall Media Player is quite extensible and agnostic to formats/codecs as provided by gstreamer. There is no need to drop Media Player "just because" your favorite stream is not supported right now.

The same applies to almost any applications utilizing gstreamer on Maemo 5.

Hello Abbra,

Thank you for the information.... can you tell me if yahoo launchcast plays on the device either from the media player or the web

Re: N900 Streaming Video

The launchcast works in Browser. Sound is clear and OK to my ear.

Most of Flash-based internet radios would work well, at least in my (albeight short) testing. Depends on heaviness of that flash widget usually and latency of available connection, of course.

I think that could conclude preliminary testing we did in this thread. Thanks everyone, hope you'll get good experience once N900 will be available!
