Tranfering files and data between two Nxx

Hello, world! :-)

This is my first post here. I've searched the forums (and even the N810 User Guide) for the answer to this question but could not find it, so I hope that some of the experienced users could share some of their knowledge.

Me and my wife are long-time Palm users. She uses her Treo mostly as a PDA (to manage contacts information, calendar, take notes, etc.) and e-book reader, and I use my T|X for that and much more (I even wrote a small Palm application to help me study Japanese on it).

One of the features that we love about Palm is transferring data via the infrared port (or bluetooth). It's easy, fast and there's no fuss with cables.

Could you tell us if there's a similar way to transfer data and files between two N900 (or older models)? AFAIK, USB is, at least for now, officially a no-no. I'm believe we could transfer files via console when both devices are connected to the same wireless network, but that is not an easy or elegant way to just send a contact information or calendar entry...

I know that the N810 has a Garnet VM, but we would be much more interested in using the Maemo native software.

Any information will be appreciated.

Thank you!

N900 has both bluetooth, and I'm pretty sure I read IR too - both methods should see you able to do everything you've been used to

Thanks, DannStarr!

I knew about the hardware part, but since I never used a Nokia tablet and never read about that function being used, I wondered if the Nxx software has that feature (something like a 1-or-2-touches to send contact data to another device).

The N900 has IR, but not the previous tablets.

Your best bet for making sure you can send files back and forth across all iterations of the tablets is definitely Bluetooth. The tablets can export vcard formatted contacts and you can send the resulting vcard file over Bluetooth to other tablets. You can also directly send a particular contact's details over Bluetooth painlessly... yes, within a few simple clicks.

Don't expect intuitive syncing. As the N8XXs are not PDAs, they are portable computers. (and the N900 adds basic some phone features)

But if this helps...:

Thanks zerojay!

And thanks linuxeventually, for sharing screenshots of the process! It surely helped! :-)

Since the N900 is (also) a phone, I expect that it will also have some functionality expected from a phone or PDA that previous tablets might have been missing. The Maemo Features page is a bit laconic, and from what it seems, I'll only get to know specifics when the device is available...
