Palm App Catalog experience

JWZ (of Netscape&XEmacs fame) tried to get his free software included in Palm App Catalog: http://jwz.livejournal.com/1096401.html

ps. Somebody send him N900 without NDA :)

Argh. Well, isn't the OVI store just Nokia's take on the same Apple-sque setup that Palm went for? Which is, whichever way you turn it, a recipe for disaster. Anyone wonder why I asked for that missing option in the ovi store poll? (I don't want anything from any OVI store).

Luckily the N900 and Maemo has another, proper, free, non-locked-in distribution channel: The Debian style repositories. That's the reason I'm in the Maemo camp.

Which is why Ovi isn't at all like the others. What's your problem with an official app store?

Even on Symbian you can install whatever you want, apt-get or not.

Because Ovi store potentially directs applications through the store structure, away from what I prefer: The .deb repository.

p.s. JohnX posted a well-written comment on JWZ's article (see original link)

Oh, I thought Ovi would just be a different repository. Is there a separate app for it?

Note that I'm not familiar with the technical framework for application distribution with Ovi store, i.e. I don't know if it's a repo with .debs or not - what I have issues with is the whole idea of a store, with corporate people filtering what gets in etc. It's been a mess with Apple store, it's definitely a mess with the Palm Pre store.

I don't have a problem with corporate filtering of a single repo. Quality control is a good thing.

Except nobody says it has anything to with quality. Not to mention that starting with Fremantle, extras already has a defined QA procedure.

I agree with livefreeordie, with respect to filtering a single repo, so long as everybody is free to download/install what apps they want from elsewhere. It could make the N900 more foolproof for those who need protection that way.

I must say I still don't understand why should I distribute my OSS software via Ovi. I get to pay 50 euros, Nokia gets the right to not accept my stuff or pull the plug on their sole discretion. There is absolutely NO quality control done by anyone but me, ditto for support or liability. Might be just me not getting it, but why is this better than extras ?
