Why did Nokia cease production of N810 ?

Hello all,
It's been a while since I posted here. I used to have an N770, which i used for note-taking and light 'couch' computing. It was stolen (i suppose) from my checked baggage at the airport.

I am considering buying an n810, but they are no where to be found. I can get a new one at Amazon for $449 or a 'refurbished' one at Ebay for $267. That's crazy.

Is Nokia being smart by not producing N810s? The N900 is not available and production for the N810 has stopped. How smart is that?

Now even if the N900 were to become available tomorrow. I'm not going to spend $500 to buy one. I don't see any reason why. I don't need a new phone. I have a Nokia 'candy bar' phone that works pretty well for me.

So I guess my question is what does Nokia think about customers who like Nokia Internet tablets but will not shell out $500 for one and do not care about the features in the N900?

Can't they simply provide the N810 and have us choose?

The production gap has been discussed here many, many times. At length. With no useful conclusions or ephianies generated. YMMV.

It does not make sense business wise.

They would have to make a large batch to justify the fixed costs of the factory, which they could be using to produce other stuff. Then, they would have to sell these to cover the fixed and variable costs of each tablet. If they made a 1000 tablets, and only 100 were sold, the 900 remaining tablets are rotting away in inventory. Unless there is a ridiculously large demand for the N810, it is not economically feasible for them to keep producing it.

If you sell a product, you should also provide support for it (incl. the software) for some time.

Unless-- the N810 was meant to be a step X of Y product designed to create/test interest levels, in which case dropping it without a clear, timely successor could be seen as market abandonment and leads to self-fulfilling failure of the future product line.

It's happened. ;)

concerning that diablo has been here for about just only one
year and the fact that the nu framework of the n900 is totally
different consider the "software support" term as stroked,
trashed and gone with the wind.

Well, I find it quite ironic, since the "support" has consisted in supposedly fixing the bug only for the next device.

That's only partially true. 4.2008.30-2, 4.2008.36-5 and 5.2008.43-7 updates were provided for Diablo. After that though your criticism is valid.
