Accessing Maemo.org from N810
 

I've been using my N810 for quite some time now, since I purchased it early this year, but only recently have I gotten around to really poking at the full capabilities of it.

I'd like to browse maemo.org, but using MicroB, the rendering of the site is so atrociously broken as to be bordering on unusable. I find this really baffling; I'm using MicroB, flashed to Diablo. Surely I can't be the only one having this trouble? And yet, my searches in the Talk pages here have yielded nothing useful.

Is there something I've missed, something I've somehow done wrong, or is this just the sad state of things?

I also have Midori, which I'm growing to appreciate deeply for its speed, but it isn't able to make use of .install links, which hampers its applicability to the task of accessing maemo.org.

Anyone have any thoughts or insights for me?

Instead of using Midori, look into Tear. The author went above and beyond to make sure that .install files work fine with it. Speed-wise, it should be the same as Midori (if not better).

I think you have "Fit width to view" turned on. Try to turn it off. It's in the magnifying glass-icon in the lower right corner, in the MicroB browser.

I have no problem with maemo.org on my N810. It's actually very well layed out for the N8x0 screen.
But I see what you mean, when I turn "Fit width to view" on, then it looks like a mess.

Hmm. I'd already installed tear, but earlier tonight when I attempted to access maemo.org it'd bombed out without warning. I'd intended to do more testing later to submit a report, but I tried it again since I saw your post. It's now working, how puzzling. :D

I'm still curious, though, as to the issue regarding maemo.org and the official browser that's included with Diablo. Is this a known issue, or something only I'm experiencing?

Edit:
Attempting to click an Install link from the Downloads section of maemo.org does... not function correctly in Tear for me. The first time I attempted to open it, I got an error which for some reason is no longer repeating. Now I only get the text contents of the link.

Okay, that's extremely baffling. I see that you're correct, but the fact this is so is perturbing for me.

For my primary use of the browser over the past few months, 'fit width to view' was mandatory, as otherwise I had to constantly scroll left/right and that was an untenable approach when dealing with text beyond the width of the window, since for some reason the browser likes to render to a greater width than displayed for many documents. Even now, I see that unless I maximize my browser, maemo.org does not fit in the browser window.

To me, this seems like a rather notable usability fail.

Yes, but to my understanding, the browser renders just like a desktop browser (one of its big plusses), and most sites are ment for bigger screens that 800 pixels wide.


But when I open talk.maemo.org, and don't maximize the browser window, I can still read the post collum, without scrolling, I can even zoom in to 120%, and read the posts, still without scrolling.

But I much prefer to browse with the browser maximized. It's only one click on the fullscreen-button.

Some sites are, but far from all, and most well-designed websites degrade to smaller resolutions.

Preferences vary. It's important to me to have certain things on the screen at all times, such as the clock, and battery indicator.

On further research, it seems to erratically function for maemo.org downloads in tear. It seems to possibly have some confusion as to how to handle the particular fashion in which downloads are linked. I'll stab at it some more, and if I can get a useful bug report together I'll send it to the maintainer.
