Always ontop notifications

Hello everyone. I've done some searching and I'd like to see if it's possible to always keep notifications on screen. I mean, when an email / im / sms is received, a little window at the top of the screen appears, which is great! Then it disappears which is also ok.
1) is it possible to extend the amount of time the notification is on screen?
2) if the screen is off, and you receive a message of a sort, and then turn on your screen, how can you tell short of just opening up the task manager (multi tasking window)?
3) if it's an IM, and you have the contact on your desktop, does a star or any type of notification show up on the contacts name on the desktop or anything like that?

if not to any of them, would it be difficult to implement?
Thanks in advance :D

There's nothing in the UI to control this as far as I know. Probably hidden in a configuration file or GConf setting somewhere.

The task manager button on the top left glows white. Also, the LED on the bottom left of the N900 will flash blue on new messages/e-mails (though it flashes a little less than I'd like).

Honestly, I haven't noticed, but I don't spend a lot of time at my desktop anyways. I'll keep an eye out.

This one is dependent on the application that is making the notification appear. libnotify (the library used to send these notification requests to be displayed by hildon-desktop) has a default time limit that the application utilizing it can override; i.e. this is not a system-wide setting.

I haven't really seen enough of Maemo 5, but is there a location where all the notifications persist? i.e. if I get SMS, IM, Email, or something (sort of like the Android Notification Tray or the webOS notifications)

Upper left of the screen I believe. I thought I read something where there would be an area that would contain all the missed messages or whatever.

Correct. Notifications cause the task switcher icon to "glow" until they are dismissed. Tap the task switcher icon, and you're taken to the dashboard. Within the dashboard, along with all your running apps, are notifications of any email messages, text messages, new IMs, etc. you've received.

See the Dashboard page on Maemo.Nokia.com.

The yellow box is a new email notification.
