Difference between Maemo select, Maemo OVI and Maemo website?

I noticed there are three different websites for downloading applications for the Nokia n900.
http://maemo.nokia.com/maemo-select
http://maemo.org/downloads/Maemo5/
https://store.ovi.com/

Whats the difference between all these 3? Which is the main one and are different applications going to be on each one?

Good question, it is a bit confusing for the average user (though I'm guessing Average Joe wouldn't look further than OVI store on their N900)

Ovi Store is for commercially-developed apps (not necessarily paid for, but usually not open-source), maemo.org downloads is for community-developed apps (not paid for and almost always open-source). Maemo Select is a web page which showcases the best apps from the two previous places.

There is also the app manager built into the N900, which by default will show maemo.org "Extras" apps (pretty much the same as the maemo.org Downloads), but not show Ovi Store by default.

At least, that's my understanding. Corrections welcome. I've also created http://wiki.maemo.org/Downloading_apps

The Ovi store strength relies on the distribution of commercial software.

The maemo.org Downloads strength relies on the distribution of community software.

Maemo Select offers a selection of recommended software from both sources. It is not a repository on its own, just redirects users to each source.

We are still working on a gateway for community software to get their place in Ovi.

We wouldn't be surprised if commercial developers find interesting the maemo.org community QA process and ask for publishing their betas there.

Yes, it's still a bit confusing but we are working to get things clear by the N900 sales start. In the Summit Ovi support was announced to be ready before the end of the year.

So is it possible to release your software for testing in maemo.org extras-devel and/or extras-devel and then later on move it to Ovi Store?

Nice explanation.
I’m really glad to see that each day there are more and more apps available at the http://maemo.org/downloads/Maemo5/
One recommendation please put images in the presentation and possibly bigger texts.
Other thing if we want that maemo be the future high end OS from nokia, it would be better that the developers should try to get some help from designers for better graphics. Much of this iphone buzz it’s just design. Everybody at maemo should concentrate on that. I think that nokia made an amazing work in terms of graphics for maemo, but it needs to be followed by the people that made the apps.
