N900 Security

Does anyone know what kind of security the N900 will feature? i was kinda hoping for remote lock the most of the E series nokias sport. and how about geo tracking from a laptop or another capable mpbile device. It would be a damn shame to have your N900 stolen and cant do anything about it....please tell me security the N900 has to offer.

Such an app may appear for the Ovi store.

No official application yet though if the device is popular enough an official one will probably be made. I believe there are unofficial ones that were worked on for the n800/n810 that were never completed due to logistics (e.g. when would the device send info if it's not always connected) or the n800 doesn't have a GPS built in.

Shouldn't be to hard with openssh access + terminal you can pretty much control the entire device from afar. And any bash script that would output the GPS location every X minutes or whatever. It's the desktop/laptop end that you would have to figure out. There's nothing like MobileMe where it will show you and give you a nice GUI to use.

You could add to that a openvpn client process which attempts to bring up a tunnel to your "mother ship" anytime it's on the internet so you always have a conduit back into it for the aforementioned openssh access.

Yeah being on the same virtual private network (either self-setup via OpenVPN) or something like LogMeIn/Hamachi would help alot too.

GUI wise, I meant there's nothing on the desktop/laptop side that is easy to most users. For example, you'd have to take GPS data and input that manually into Google Maps. Or you'd have to use the command line to control the device.

e.g. "sudo shutdown now" or whatever.

i think nokia should start making remote lock on their phones via text messages manditory, especially on high tech EXPENSIVE devices such as this.....and also (although unrelated) text to speech....my nokia 5700's screen went blank and i didnt buy a phone for a month, though i couldnt write and send texts i could listen to all incoming texts, that was a life saver. these apps may appear useless but at the right time they sure do come in handy

You can buy such software for iPhoneOS and S60. For Maemo it'd require additional programming, and SMS is a relatively new feature.

Yeah, give the thief access to your mother ship by routing all the data through them honeypots!! :D probably won't work. First he will do is refresh, second is getting rid of it ASAP by selling.

Check oiut thrrad abou truecrypt and luks ..

There has been some interest in making a gps tracking app or similar:

And also an anti-theft app:

One anti-theft app from S60 is being ported:

Good idea, not only the thief gain access to your device, but to all your private network too :)
