what do you mean by "porting", copying existing messages? probably not, but maybe through PC suite?

yep, copying messages over. PC Suite copies messages to the PC but not back to a phone again.

There is a sever lack of applications that do this - I have no idea why - surely they are almost as important as emails? Also why is there no service to save the messages to say the cloud..

I see a developers opportunity here.

Im pretty sure a backup of your old phone, and restore to the N900 is possible.

It works between other Nokia phones, and I remember eithe qgil or Peter@Maemo saying that they had tried this personally and it had worked.

You're not thinking about transfer of contacts, are you? I've seen videos demonstrating that, but not seen anything about transferring texts. Maybe someone could provide a link to where this has been mentioned.

In PC Suite you can use Export and export them into an XML file, then plug in the N900 and Import them back.

Maybe someone with an actual N900 can try this?
