N900; US vs. Europe version 3G coverage?
Gentlemen,
Based on the followings: Mobile City Online: http://www.mobilecityonline.com/wire...900&Submit=Go; the specs for the N900 are; “Nokia N900 Mobile Computer Unlocked Import: Optimized for WCDMA 900//2100” AND “Nokia N900 Mobile Computer Unlocked US: Optimized for WCDMA 900/1700/2100” Reply from: importgsm.com: “Unfortunately the N900 US version is not out yet. The only difference will be the 3G frequency and warranty region. GSM will work worldwide on both versions. The US version will work internationally, and on T-mobile 3G in the US. The import version will work on international 3G only.” Forgive my ignorance, put simply please..; regarding 3G, does this mean that the US version would be useable/cover the Europe and ”import” areas but the Europe ”import” version can only cover/ be used in Europe? I assume quad band GSM would cover either market but I travel to both areas and was wondering which version to purchase to achieve the maximum on 3G? |

any imported version will work just fine on T-Mo USA (1700 AWS). the SIM Card will tell the device which frequencies to use. worst thing that could happen is that f.ex. the UK firmware disables 1700, in that case you can just flash US firmware on the device. but i highly doubt you'll need to do that. |

SubCore,
Many thanks for the reply, based on this and for argument's sakes it would be safer to purchase the US version, as it is claimed to cover all three bands, right? TD |
Re: N900; US vs. Europe version 3G coverage?
if you want to be on the super-safe side and if purchasing in the states isn't troublesome for you, then yes.
i don't think it's really necessary though. no one (except nokia) can say for sure at this time, since no one has received their production N900s yet, but it would be very unusual if that functionality were disabled in some firmware. |
Re: N900; US vs. Europe version 3G coverage?
Hi,
Given that the prices in the US (Amazon for example) are much lower than the unlocked version available in the UK, I might try to get the N900 bought there and sent over by a friend. Would the difference in models affect my experience of 3G/HSDPA networks in Europe if I used a US model? Also, is Nokia differentiating firmwares based on product codes like with Symbian, or is every model able to automatically receive firmware updates? |

if you buy from EU or US will make no difference they both support identical bands,
there's only one version in production in terms of bands supported |
Re: N900; US vs. Europe version 3G coverage?
I just bought an N900 in the US and am about to get a 3G+ phone contract in France (i am looking for a recommendation for which contract but that's another post).
Can anyone confirm from personal experience that a US-bought N900 works with full 3G+ in France (all 7 or 10 mb/s or whatever)? Thanks for any help. |

I can confirm it works in the EU but where I live is my own business :D
