Don't rush with news (pre-release units to PR1.0)
Hello.
I just had a bad day with N900. I was happily doing my progress with Qt 4.5/6 (yes, bot at the same time until 4.6 gets stable) on Maemo 5. Then I received the news that "we should all upgrade the firmware today". Cool, I did. Then I went to re-enable all the repositories with a very ugly surprise: Extras-Devel (and later on also Extras-Testing) were "weirdly misconfigured". The file "Release" was not providing the Checksums as supposed to. A lot of search online and other waste of time trying to figure out WTF was going on. Then, 5 minutes ago, I decide to "check the repository by hand again". Everything was back to normal and working flawlessly. NOW. I'm absolutelly happy that the problem was quickly fixed, but guys (mainly Nokia guys I guess), please announce big things ONLY WHEN EVERYTHING IS ONLINE, UP, AND RUNNING 100%. There are "idiots" like me that get exited and upgrade the very next second. Thanks ;) |
Re: Don't rush with news
Out of curiosity, what did you use to update your device?

Extras-devel having problems and releasing a firmware aren't really related.
Although I had to refresh reposories couple of times before they worked too. |

Confirming. It was a server-side issue, I was not able to update my 41-10, too.

I assumed that there is a coordination between who maintains the repositories and who maintains the FW images. The problems for me got connected by the fact that reflashing made my device reset. So I needed to reinstall the packages. BUT, if the "control" of the two things is not coordinated or related, then I didn't know. But let me say that it's fair to assume so. |

I think I know what was the problem. There is this thick Akamai cache that won't serve exactly the same to all the corners of the Internet at the same second when you do changes like yesterday's.
If we wait until the cache is totally refreshed then people will rush here guessing about the changes before we communicate anything and somebody will tell us that why we release things before announcing them timely. If we don't have such thick cache then people encounter bandwith problems well known in the past but apparently unexistent nowadays. |

Who in the world would ever do that? :P Ok, mystery solved. Next time I send my complaint to Akamai :D |
Re: Don't rush with news (pre-release units to PR1.0)
Is that problem still going on? I'm unable to get the catalogue from extras-devel right now due to the same error.
Akamai should be able to sync slightly faster than 24hours, or not? :D |
