the same with mine (from the very beginning)
sometimes it takes hours to get it on,
sliding cover on/off
but works immediately on with power charger jack inserted.

Did that with me. Means battery is bad.
If you've had it since 2005,unfortunately my dears the battery is old.
Also use 2005 or 2006 OS.
Hacker builds will act up. :o
