Is it possible to configure accelemeter to work like physical buttons?

I have an idea that might be interesting or then this is totally old.

We have an accelemeter on n900. What if we configure accelemeter to work like physical buttons through the whole OS. It can give to us at least 5 new buttons. (Turn up, down, left, right, shake). It would be so cool if I start dosbox and run games (for example Stunts or Wolfenstein 3d) and I'm able to use accelemeter "buttons" as my controls.

There are many standart keyboard buttons that we are not using at the moment. Another possibility is put to working them together with arrow keys etc.

Functionality could be useful somewhere else too. In browser we could use accelemeter to help us with scrolling or zooming or front and back buttons.

Is this possible to make and who could be the one?

I'm considering if there is actually a Brainstorm here...

The accellerometer can be used as a control. There is a asteroid-like game already that does so, and I expect more apps to follow.

I am hoping a developer can contribute more to this to help me decide if this really constitutes a Brainstorm topic. But I do appreciate your enthusiasm nonetheless!
