N900 Flash pointers for better experience

A. If you are getting lag with Flash content & streaming movies, you can do two things that should provide a huge improvement to performance (I do not know if the same thing can be done with 3G):

1. Adjust the cache to 40mb in the browser options / settings
2. If you are using wifi, go to your connection and edit it using the advanced options. Change power setting to the medium option. I was unable to keep a steady video stream or play the larger Flash games until I adjusted this setting. This is in spite of having my N900 in the same room as the router- seems the default setting may be too conservative for some. I am not noticing much more power consumption, but will need a few days to confirm.

B. Flash games with minimum overhead:

1. Save Flash games to a folder of your choice on the N900
2. Use the file manager and go to where you saved the game
3. Launch the game
a. You can adjust the size with volume buttons
b. Hold down on the screen until the Flash menu opens up
c. Adjust the quality setting to low - you will not notice a quality difference on a 3.5" screen, but will notice the performance increase:)
d. Have fun playing a zillion games :)

These sound like good tips. I'll be sure to use them when Dell delivers my n900. Isn't flash getting some hardware acceleration next year?

The N900 probably already uses some GPU acceleration of Flash, but not optimized for mobile chipsets like 3430 or other mobile devices.

I think that if there were not some GPU assist, embedded pages would be close to impossible and so would most games.

Thanks for the great cache tip! It really helps!

But please don't change wifi power settings unless you absolutely must do so. Any setting other than the default sucks the battery dry in no time at all.

I recommend spending another $50 and getting a better router. I have never had any problems with the Cisco WRT-54GL with custom firmware (DD-WRT).

EDIT: Flash 10, due early next year, should add the missing and badly needed hardware acceleration.

My current router works great. I am having the problem in the same room as the router. The signal on the N90 shows full bars, but streaming video stops after about 30 seconds and does not resume- same issue with streaming radio. I changed to medium settings and the problem stopped. I change back and it starts again. The wifi on the N900 appears to be just as weak as the G1, but at least when the G1 shows full bars, HQ Youtube streams perfectly. Nothing does on the N900 at default wifi settings.

There's a known bug with the N900 and some wifi routers that don't work well with the power saving settings set to the default Max. It doesn't seem to be the exact same problem that you're having but could be related.

Apparently this bug has already been fixed internally but I'm not sure if it was part of the firmware update that was released a few days ago. And since I don't have access to the router that was causing me that problem, I can't check either. Do you have the latest firmware version (v. 1.2009.42-11) ?

another thing i found when viewing videos is that if u hold the screen long enough a menu would popup on the video and let's you change the settings from low, med, and high quality like you would if u right click on a video on ur computer when streaming videos

I am definitely having wifi issues that are specific to the N900. But, man, when it works- it works very well!

I also notice that if I leave the option to automatically switch to wifi if available, that cause connection issues too. A lot of times 2G will not even connect to the web- even when wifi is not available.

Since disabling the automatic wifi, the connections seem to be a little better. But nowhere near as good as my G1 or the Droid. Ironic and sad- hope they send an update out :(
