I'll buy N900, but I have questions about it :/
Hi, sorry if creating a new thread about asking sth is bad, but I'm really excited and curious about N900. I'll buy it this month but I have some questions, even I maybe cancel my order 'cause of them.
1) Is it true we cand send/receive MMS messages? Is it possible getting mms messages after software updates? 2) Really important for me: Is it capable of making/receiving video calls via 3G? If its not, is it impossible to do or just have to wait for update? 3) Compared to iPhone, is it better or not? I know its not an easy question. 4) Any other "cons" about N900? I've read forum threads(like "N900 - Sucks" but they just complain about software. I'm more interested at hardware faults/cons, not sw. |

5) I have a Nokia N96 now and i'm buying N900 as a phone, not tablet-I love/use Linux anyway- Compared to N96, any cons as phone?

1) prob after update 2) not yet hopefully soon, esp through something like skype 3) n900 has more options, not as user friendly, and mostly better hardware 2 4) not that many apps right now, but that will come in time, cant rly think of anything hardware related except the mic issue some have, oh and i guess for some ppl the sd slot placement |

2. It has the hardware required but not the software. I don't know when or if the software is coming or not. 3. Not gonna answer that. 4. There are few reported duds in the wild. At this point it's difficult to say reliably if these are common or not. Hope that helped you. |

Try a few of the blogs, previews, and the 'first impressions' threads. Avoid ones with titles like 'it sucks' as you probably won't get an unbiased view (from either side). Sit down and write a list of the things a device must have for you, and see how many n900 fills. If it's missing too many, I'd look elsewhere rather than wait on the assumption that someone will write an app for that. Good hunting. |

Yes, oranges are better than apples.

1) As of right now, there is no software on the device to send/recieve mms. There has been discussion about adding this, but it isn't possible right now, and there hasn't been any official word about when/if it will be available. Some people have suggested email as a (better) alternative for sending pictures, etc.
2) It has a webcam on the front, but I don't think video calling is enabled yet. I think it's being worked on though. 3) People will give you different answers to this question. It has many advantages over the iphone that I appreciate (open development, crisper screen, hardware keyboard,...), but other people may find that they prefer the iphone for various reasons. 4) It's a new device, so there will be some rough edges. Even the iphone, which a lot of people treat like the holy grail of "smartphones", didn't start off with it's app store, had no mms for years, and still has lots of controversies. I don't have a device yet, but most of the issues do seem to be software issues more than hardware issues. Don't expect usb host mode, since that may be a hardware limitation. I would recommend a screen protector. |
