Poll: How bad is the GSM RF performance?

I live in an area where I am lucky to get 2 bars on TMO. On good days maybe 3. My old V series Moto phone would drop calls in the house. My Dash is able to hold a signal in the house. (just about everything else about it is poor)

I saw reports of weak rf performance in a couple of threads. Those of you with N900s living in the fringe areas, how bad is it?

I have an N900 on order, but if it will be useless as a phone, I am thinking about canceling the order.

Thank you.

I only can say, that it is much-much better, than qTec 2020i. IMHO not worse, than other nokia phones.

Was the q Tec particularly bad?

Consistently gives me one more bar then my GF's 5800xm. Standard deadspots (t-mo users learn then off by heart) are not dead on N900...and Yeah 3G. I actuall think the Rf radio/antenna array is stronger then most phones. Others have postes that N900 beats their G1's

I like the sounds of that. I know a handful of drop spots on my normal commute and near my house so I'm looking forward to see how it does. I've been getting frustrated with my E71 because the antennae is on the bottom and constantly drops out when I put my hand near. Glad to hear the strength is better.

here's examples for everyone:

My House:

O2 on the N97: 1 bar / No signal of 2G
O2 on the BB 8900: 3-5 bars of 2G / 1-2 Bars of EDGE
O2 on the N900: 4-5 bars of 2G / 2 bars of 3G.

Voda on the N97: 2-3 bars of 2G / No 3G
Voda on the 8900: 4-5 bars of 2G
Voda on the N900: 5-6 bars of 3G

Summary:

N900 reception is as good as my blackberry if not better than the blackberry & SIGNIFICANTLY better than E71/N97/N97mini in my opinion. Also beats signal on my N95.

Thank you for the informative reply. I had read on a few threads that some members were having weak signal problems. This would have been a deal breaker for me with TMO in my area.

It is refreshing to hear that the N900 actually excels in areas other than browsing speed.

Re: How bad is the GSM RF performance?

The N900 loses signal in areas none of these phones do with Tmo where I live:

N-Gage
Sammy T349
Nokia 3610
Tmo Dash
SE Walkman phone
G1

All six of these devices work in areas that the N900 does not. Easily the weakest GSM signal on a phone I have used. Works great in medium to high signal areas and phone call quality is super clear.

Still love my N900, but the signal thing is killing me:(

My G1 is far better with signal in weak areas than the N900. No contest. G1 is weak as a device compared to the N900, so the irony is tough.

I think that is one of the best phones I tried in the last 15 years on the reception side.

BTW I'm using it mainly in 3g.
