The n900 acting as a cellular modem, or possibly connecting to one

Now that we have a smartphone that's actually a tablet pc, will it be possible to turn it into a cellular modem?
I am reffering to those usb connected devices that have a sim card in them and enable you to connect to the internet on your laptop.
The reason im asking is that the data plans on those things are much better and cheaper, and seeing how well skype calls work.. Anyway, long story short- can i take the sim card out of one of these and put it in my n900 and make it suplly endless amounts of intarwebs? Or alternativally is there a way to make it connect to my n900 somehow?
Thanks.

Yes you can.

Actually term for what you are describing is called tethering where you use your N900 as a bridge to connect your computer/laptop to the Internet.

This is done by connecting your N900 to carrier's network (3G/HSPDA is preferred) then connect your N900 to the PC via USB cable.
On Windows you start up PC Suite and 'Connect to the Internet' to start tethering.

There are some guide around for Linux too.

Be warn that even when your carrier network says you got unlimited use, they actually capped it in their terms and conditions to prevent 'abuse'

I think that iptables is (at the moment) the missing bit to have a fully working wifi router.

hold on, i'm not sure we're on the same page here- i know you can use your data plan and lets say jaiku spot (if i remember the name correctly) to make your cellphone a wlan modem, but that's not what im looking for.
I'm talking about taking the sim card out of your cellular modem and inserting it in your n900 thus achieving an internet connection, but having no cellular telephony (am i making sense here?).
If you're talking about that kind of thing already then thanks..
