N900-Applications for offline use of GPS

Hi!

I'm looking for an application which shows the geo-location without being connected to the internet. Is there anything like this for N900?
Or maybe even using downloaded maps?

Thanks

You could (ab)use GPXview or Osm2Go for example...

Note though that these are still in the Extras-Testing application catalogue and hence not yet available in the Application Manager.

Applications in Extras-Testing still need testing and hence may drain your battery or even damage your device. Please only test them if you really know what you are doing, else wait until they are available in Extras and hence in the Application Manager.

Hi,

Currently there are no applications for offline map based navigation. Sygic, a developer of navigation software for Symbian S60, Windows Mobile, iPhone and Android has made a press release that they are currently writing their Mobile Maps navigation software for the Maemo platform. They said that it will be available by the end of 2009. Let's hope, it would made my N900 experience even better!

Uh, OVI MAPS?!? You do have to connect first online to download maps, but those maps are cached in the device for offline use. Best mapping solution out there imo.

I'm going to test it next week on my trip to Egypt to see the Pyramids. I have already added the maps in. I may take my N82 as backup though (plus that xenon flash is so much better than dual LED).

I have downloaded maps of various countries onto the phone for offline use, but when I search for a location it needs to connect.

Anyone know a way around this?

The only workaround for this, until Nokia support navigation for N900, is to install Sygic Maps Naviagation.

You can have the whole earth downloaded offline, but search needs to be online.
Shame on you Nokia.

I think Sygic is a great application. I used it in my Destin trip. It works well. I can not give up my Garmin Nuvi 1200 since it has 4 million POIs (POIs in Sygic sucks, it does not even show Walmart or Destin Outlet). But I think I can trust my nokia while my GPS is not in my car.
