Advanced Backlight for N900?

I find the minimum brightness level on the N900 still too bright and wish I had a way to
  • disable the sensor temorarily so the brightness stays the same
  • get to the lowest brightness levels that are possible hardware-wise

I played a bit with
/sys/class/backlight/acx565akm/brightness
but of course writing to it from the command line doesn't help - well it does... for a few seconds ;)

I miss the Advanced Backlight application or something of that kind.

(BTW, would there be a possibility to do what I want from a shell script? Permanently set brightness to a certain very low level and prevent the sensor from interfering? Is it just a matter of writing to a few files in /sys/ or is there mor to it?)

I would love to see something like this too. Ambient light sensor doesn't seem to work too well on my unit. It keeps switching between two levels...

Interesting that you find the minimum (lowest level setting 1) of the display to be still too bright. I set mine to level 3 (due to short battery life) and I find it not bright enough. Brightness levels 1 and 2 are too dark that I can't read words on the screen. If I wasn't saving battery life, I would prefer level 5, that would be bright enough. I wonder what levels most ppl are using if battery life wasn't an issue.

I agree with Benny. I too miss Advanced backlight. In a dark bedroom it feels like staring into a flashlight. Also, i think the keyboard is slightly noisier. All in all lower girlfriend acceptance factor.

I'd like to see an Advanced Backlight on the N900 too. (I'm also jonesing for a Personal Menu as well)

See, that is proprietary defensive thinking. Should not need, okay, but say 'however, we'd love you to come up with something even better'

edit: after reading the links provided further down this page, i don't think i was right to make this conclusion. It seems to have been more a belief that the default functionality would be good enough.

Oh it looks like there's a private beta in progress...

Some interesting reading on this page:

I, too, would love to see this app ported to this device. It is one of my faves on my 800. I like the granularity it offers...

Qole, good find. Cool :)
