Google Gears Maemo 5/Fennec Port
Can someone please port google gears/fennec to Maemo 5 for N900. It's open source, freely available here.
Surprised it hasn't been done already, offline google mail/reader etc. would be epic. And it shouldn't be that much of a challenge as it's already open source and linux/firefox based. Cheers! |

I would enjoy this feature too, since i don't have a data plan, and would want to cashe my email into my phone without a connection

+1.
I think you can open a bug report. |

Re: Google Gears Maemo 5/Fennec Port
Gears is already ported to Linux 32-bit systems, which is the base of Maemo. My N810 has Maemo 4 installed, and has the Gears requirements or better (libc2.5 and libstdc++6).
I'm assuming Fennec runs as well on the Maemo 5 as it does on Maemo 4, so that part is fine. I did try installing Google Gears via Fennec, and everything seemed fine until the installation actually tried to run. The problem is that Fennec is still pre-1.0, and reports to Gears that it is an unsupported build type ("Linux_unknownABI"). I have to believe that once Fennec hits 1.0 ("any day now") it should have a proper build identifier. There is indeed an item in the Gears issue tracker for Maemo support. It has some information about things you can try if you've a technical bent. If not, wait a week or two after Fennec's 1.0 release and see if it works! |

Fennec rc was recently released and was unusably slow for the twitterers I saw and for me.
