[Maemo 5] Dataplan Monitor - Ideas for Enhancements: Define Max Value and Automatic Resets

I have downloaded the personal data plan monitor from maemo select, and the idea is a very usefull one. However it is poorly implemented.
Here is my idea of how the widget should be\behave to be of real use to the end user. Hopefully someone will make it happen.
Here is the original program
http://maemo.nokia.com/maemo-select/...onal-gprs-mon/

What this program does is to display the traffic you make on the personal network connection ( vodafone internet, for instance)
However this is of little use.
Here is how i think it would be more usefull
1)Ability to add in its settings a value that is considered maximum, for instance 400 total megabytes. Your trafic is,: lets say you have 100mb upload and 60mb download It should display 160mb total trafic, 40% of montlhy trafic. You should also have the ability to set a monthy date, say, the 2nd of every month, when the traffic gets reset. On the 00:00 of the 2nd of every month, the counter of the program (not of the phone), goes to zero and starts again. This way you can see what percent you end up using every month.
You should have an option to report un-used traffic in the app. Say this month you used 300 of the 400mb, and have 100mb left.
Next month instead of 400 you have 400+100=500mb
You should set the maximum amount of the report value.
The report value can be no more than the total trafic value. You can report maximum 400mb, for a total of 800mb monthly traffic.
This info is separate for different internet connections.

I would create this widget myself, but i have ZERO knowledge in making this happen. I don't even know where to learn what i need to learn to make it happen.
And i'm pissed because i have some other good ideas.

For now on, what do you guys think about my idea ?

Totally agreed
Same as you , lack of knowledge ( still learning on ubuntu !!!)

I disagree. The dataplan monitor shows me exactly what I want to know, namely how much data I have used so far this month. My data plan doesn't roll over, so I don't need the monitor to. I keep an awareness in my head of about how much I can spare and when the data-month expires. I don't need to know what percentage I've used - just that I'm under the limit.

Why would you disagree? You just said that you keep an awareness in your head, so having it on there would be beneficial. lol

I'm with Kathy on this one, is it really so hard to look at a monitor number and compare than to a given number that is likely to remain the same each month?

The monitor works fine for me as it: why make it more cumbsersome than it is?

I think what would be cooler would be able to set the max, and then have the notifier display your data in green (safe), yellow (close i.e. within 50mb), or red (you are over the limit)

visually intuitive, requires no extra widget space.

I meant cumbersome in terms of resource requirement and UI. At present there is no UI requirements for input, this would be required just to cope with a number that you could input yourself. The widget would also have to query the dat/time a lot to compare to the reset date. Would the colouration be based on overall usage for the given period (some people use per month, others per week) or on your usage relevant to progression through the given period? All this added complexity to a simple programme. It would also as a result use more power, not a lot but it all adds up.

I agree with Kathy on this as well. I prefer to keep information in my brain more often than not.

If you ask why... simply... if you don't use it you lose it :)

And in my head, it doesn't use CPU or battery. ;)

Basically, I was trying to say what Fargus said... only I was three quarters asleep.
