VNC Viewer to a Mac
Has anyone gotten the VNCViewer app to work on an N900 to a Mac? I've tried just about everything (well, a lot of different scenarios) and nothing works. I'm trying to see a Mac Mini running 10.6.2 behind a router (Apple Express through and Apple Extreme base station). I've tried all the various online suggestions (though none are Snow Leopard specific) as well as downloading RealVNC and Vine Server. Nothing works. I've tried opening ports on the Apple Extreme. Nothing.
If anyone has been successful, I'd really appreciate some direction. Thank you! |
Re: VNC Viewer to a Mac
I use it to connect to macs, it works ok, but the redraw is horrible, on first connect all I get is a black screen and have to move the mouse/windows round the whole screen to get it to redraw...

I've got it to work nicely - though like others said, it's laggy to the extent that controlling Mac with it is a pain. I'm using Leopard 10.5 instead of Snow Leopard 10.6, so I don't know if there's any difference, but here's how I got mine to work: Mac: 1. Connect Mac to the home wifi. 2. Go to System Preferences, then click on Sharing. 3. Enable Screen Sharing, and while there you can specify a password to connect if you want by clicking on Computer Settings and enabling "VNC viewers may control screen with password". 4. In the Screen Sharing preference window, where it says "Other users can access your computer at vnc://xxx.xxx.x.xxx/ or browse...", the xxx.xxx.x.xxx is the IP address you connect to your Mac from VNC Viewer in N900. Yours may be different, but in my case it's 192.168.2.100 N900: 1. Connect N900 to home wifi. 2. After opening VNC Viewer, enter the IP address of Mac where it says "VNC server". 3. When you click OK, if you set a password it will ask for it. Otherwise you're in a viewer with scroll bars that should show part of your Mac desktop. If it's black screen, wait a little for it to load. Hope this helps. |

Hopefully someone will make a VNC client more friendly with the Mac server, I'm fairly sure this one won't ever be compatible since it's RealVNC and their clients have never supported Macs well |

My mac is connected to the home wifi/router hub by cable rather than Wifi...is this relevant? The sharing preferences on my mac say "Other users can access your computer at vnc://Macintosh.home/ or browse for "Apple mac mini’s Computer"." It's vnc://Macintosh.home/ that I have entered as the IP address when my N900 asks for VNC server - is that right? >>Edit: looked in the settings for my BT Homehub and it gives the IP address for my mac as 192.168.1.66 but trying this I get "connection failed". |
Re: VNC Viewer to a Mac
^^^^^ forget all that...
I installed Vineserver on my mac and it seems to be working perfectly! |
