[Request] Evince for Maemo5

Evince is much more powerful than the default pdf viewer coming with the N900: has search, highlighting, thumbnails, and opens djvu files which are quick to browse even for massive ebooks, and also tiff and ps and dvi.

I tried to install the os2008 version for evince, including dependencies (which were libjdvulibre15, libkpathsea3 and libpoppler-glib2), after optifying, and it starts indeed, but dies at file/open (even if it works by issuing evince filename.pdf at command prompt). So there must be something involving dialogs that it searches and doesn't find in the new environment.

I can't do much more with my skills, apart from installing in easy debian (which works btw but isn't fit to the Maemo5 GUI).

So, community, please port evince

I second this. I also use evince from easy debian but would very much like a maemo 5 port of this wonderful document viewer. The fact that you cannot search in the build in pdf reader is really a deal breaker.

Evince seems to run fine if you install the package from the OS2008-repository with dpkg and then add the dependencies via apt-get.

So you will need to download the latest evince-release from OS2008 from here:

http://repository.maemo.org/extras/p...free/e/evince/
(choose the _armel.deb)

then you need a terminal with root access

Code:

root

dpkg -i /path/to/evince_2.xx.x-x.maemox_armel.deb

there will be some warnings about unsatisfied dependencies, to install them you have to

Code:

apt-get -f install

Did you try to actually open a pdf file with the menu open file command? It silently dies - at least in my hands :)

Same here. It only works if I open the file from the command line.

Another thing. Can you read djvu files? If I open a djvu file, I can only se the previews, while the actual pages are blank.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I am most pleased to announce that after the recent dist-upgrade, Evince from Maemo 4 runs well on my tablet and opens files like a breeze :) :) :) The only issue by far is I can't go back after fullscreening the app (we now need a wmctrl-based toggle command hooked to some key combo).

Go get the optified deb plus the dependencies (taken from Maemo 4 repos) from http://www.debernardis.it/downloads/...Evince2008.zip

EDIT djvu has blank pages for me too, unfortunately :(

@dread123: what's reported in xterm when you try to install libpoppler?

Since I have quite a lot of scanned books and articles in djvu format, I tried installing djview under easy debian, and I am happy to say that it works quite well.

The program starts up pretty fast and is overall very responsive. Even though it isn't optimized for a touch screen it actually works quite well even without the stylus (although it is easier to control the menus with the stylus).
